HUDSON – Scoring all the runs they’d need in the fourth inning, the Bishop Guertin High School baseball team knocked off Alvirne, 2-1, on the Broncos’ home field in the preliminary round of the Division I tournament.

The Cardinals earned their way into a quarterfinal against Keene, a 3-0 winner over Nashua North, Saturday at Holman Stadium.

“At no time did I or the kids think we were a six-win team,” Bishop Guertin coach Scott Painter said. “This is proof of that.”

Aiden Meaney doubled home the Cardinals’ first run in the fourth and Alex Lambalot, who’d singled, eventually scored from third on a fielder’s choice.

Alvirne’s defense had much to do with limiting BG’s output. Left fielder Matt Misserville had the play of the day, robbing Kam Thibault of a home run.

Alvirne’s run came on pitcher Nick Jacques’ RBI single with two outs in the first.

“They made the plays they had to make to win the game,” Alvirne coach Adam Perkins said. “Hat’s off to them.”

During the regular season, Alvirne won both games against the Cardinals, 8-4 and 2-1.

BG defeated Keene in their only regular-season meeting, 8-4.
