And then there were three.
The only high school tennis teams remaining in the state tournament after a mostly tough day Tuesday are the Alvirne and Souhegan boys, plus the Hollis Brookline girls, who won on Monday
Gone are the Bishop Guertin girls and Nashua South boys, both victims of the Hanover Marauders.
As a result, Alvirne will host Exeter in the Division I semis Thursday and on that day Souhegan will host Lebanon.
Today, Hollis Brookline is at Bishop Brady in the Division II girls semifinals at 4 p.m.
Here’s a look:
GIRLS TENNIS
HANOVER 7,
BISHOP GUERTIN 2
The Cards went into doubles needing to sweep, and instead got swept as their season ended at home in the quarterfinals.
Hannah Gilbertson downed Hanover’s Carly Miles 8-3 at No. 2 singles and Abby Linskey downed Lyrie Wilson, 8-2, at No. 6 singles.
However, once it got to doubles, Hanover’s No. 1 team of Noor Van Aalst and Miles downed Gilbertson and Katelyn Nichols, 8-2, and that was that.
Gilbertson and Nichols are the only players Guertin loses off its ladder to graduation.
“We were not at our best when it really mattered,” Cards coach Barry Ndyna said. “But that’s just the way it is, right? So we’re going to look forward to next year. They’re (Hanover) very deep, and they have a steady game plan which is to not miss.”
BOYS TENNIS
DIVISION I QUARTERS
HANOVER 8,
NASHUA SOUTH 1
The Panthers’ lone win came from Akhil Kammila as he beat the Marauders Zhiuen Liu 8-4 at No. 4 singles.
South dropped a couple of close matches that might have made a little difference. Atul Phadke lost to Kevin Pillsbury at No. 3 singles 8-6, and the No. 1 doubles team of Santiago Somorrosto/Abhinav Avvaru lost to Hanover’s Evan Yang/Alex Rochmore, 8-6.
“We ended the season at 15-2 thanks to a talented team and a great group of parents,” Panthers coach Dave Santerre said.
ALVIRNE 8,
SALEM 1
The Broncos got their usual two wins from Nos. 1 and 2 singles, Peyton and Ashton Meuse, both by 8-0 scores, and three other singles players followed suit to give them the win: Tom Bondaruk (8-1), Charlie Thomas (8-4) and Jon Rudy (9-7).
The Broncos swept doubles, as the Meuse brothers (8-0), Bondaruk/Thomas (8-0) and Jon Rudy/Bureke (8-4) won.
Now Alvirne moves on to the semis, hosting Region 3 champ Exeter at 4 p.m. on Thursday.
SOUHEGAN 7,
CONVAL 2
The Sabers lost to ConVal twice by a 7-2 margin during the regular season.
But Tuesday was an incredible turnaround, with the Sabers taking four of six singles to set themselves up for doubles.
Singles winners included Josh Goddard, 8-3 at No. 1 singles; No.2 James Zeolie, 8-5; No. 4 Mike Dodge 8-4, and Matt Yates at No. 6, 8-2.
The No. 3 doubles team of Connor Firmin/Matt Yates provided the clincher, 8-4. The other two teams, No. 2 Zeolie/ Ryan Fernandez (8-5) and No. 1 Goddard/Dodge 8-6.
The Saber team now isn’t the same one that played earlier in the season, obviously, as Souhegan coach John Kilgore used the basically meaningless regular season (with regard to seeding, etc.) to play with different lineups.
“I lettered all 11, all played, and I sacrificed some matches to get experience across the board,” Kilgore said.
BASEBALL
HOLLIS BROOKLINE 7,
PELHAM 1
Charlie Hale got the win for the Cavaliers allowing three hits over four innings, striking out five and walking none. Torin White (2 for 4, four RBIs) and Zack Lussier (2 for 4, one RBI) led the way.
Others involved in the offense were Drew Gryniewicz (1 for 2, RBI, two runs), Jack Bergin (1 for 4, double) and Brandon Hsu (double, two walks.
Hsu (two innings, five strikeouts) and Lager ( one inning, two strikeouts) pitched in relief.
HB will now be at Milford in the next round on Thursday at 4 p.m.
SOFTBALL
CAMPBELL 15,
ST. THOMAS 0
The Cougars pounded out 15 hits to advance to the preliminary round, led by Catherine Carignan’s two home runs and two singles.
Kayleigh Wilnus (two RBIs), Emily Cooper, Lyndsey Brown (two RBIs) and Maddie Davis (four RBIs) all had two hits.
Davis allowed just two hits over five innings, striking out 10, while Carignan tossed two frames, allowing one hit, striking out three.
Campbell goes to play at Prospect Mountain today at 4 in the prelims.
TIME CHANGE
Milford’s softball prelim with Manchester West at Keyes Park has been changed to a 3:30 p.m. start from 4.
