HS Roundup: South rules over North; Sabers edge Cavs

The second half of Nashua North-South week, besides the great girls track and field duel at Winnacunnet, took place on Thursday with a boys tennis preliminary round match and two lacrosse games, and the Panthers came away 3 for 3.

But there was so much more going on yesterday, as Souhegan edged Hollis Brookline in the Division II boys tennis tourney, and there were other events as well.

But we begin with tennis:

BOYS TENNIS

PRELIMS

DIVISION I

NASHUA SOUTH 9,

NASHUA NORTH 0

The Panthers (13-1) shut out the Titans and continue their tournament run. Singles winners were Santiago Sommorostro (8-0), Abhinav Avvaru (8-1), Atul Phadke (8-0), Akhil Kammila (8-0), Neil Kachappily (8-0) and Praneet Nadella (8-3). Sommorostro/Avvaru (8-3), Kaushik Tadipathri/Shubh Dubey (9-7) and Connor/Ben Lambright (8-1) won in doubles.

South will play the winner of Keene/Hanover on Tuesday.

“We’ve been blessed with three great freshmen, and the kids are into working hard,” South coach Dave Santerre said. “The machine is running on all eight cylinders. They have a very good thing going.”

ALVIRNE 5,

DERRYFIELD 4

The Broncos cut it close, but found a way to get by Derryfield to move on to the next round. Peyton Meuse (8-6), Ashton Meuse (8-0) and Tom Bondaruk (8-3) won in singles. The teams of Meuse/Meuse won 8-0 and Bondaruk/Charlie Thomas won 8-6. Alvirne plays the winner of Pinkerton/Salem on Tuesday.

DIVISION II

PRELIMS

SOUHEGAN 5,

HOLLIS BROOKLINE 4

The Cavaliers took four of the first five singles matches, and only lost one other in a tiebreaker. But the Sabers swept doubles, and that was the difference as they move on and the Cavs’ season ends.

Souhegan’s two singles wins came from James Zeolic at No. 2 in a 9-8 tiebreaker and Matt Yates at No. 6, 8-2.

Josh Goddard/Mike Dodge at No. 1 (8-6), Zeolic/Ryan Fernandez (8-6) and Yates/Andrew Ross (8-2) did the trick at doubles for the Sabers, who visit ConVal Tuesday in the quarterfinals.

HB got singles wins by Will Pesiridis 8-0, plus Bryson Griersch, Rory Klauber and Hayden Smith.

BOYS LACROSSE

NASHUA SOUTH 18,

NASHUA NORTH 4

Jaden Murphy (eight goals) recorded his 100th career goal in the Panthers win over the Titans. Drew Fleury tallied three goals and one assist and Griffin Johnson matched with one goal and three assists.

Nate Campbell (three assists), Sam Fletcher (two goals), Aidan Walsh (two assists), Tyler Armeen (one goal, one assist), Rhett Medling (one goal, one assist), Parker Fleury (one goal) and Josh Taylor (one goal) added to the offensive outburst.

Ethan Johnson and Colin Sewade shared time in net making six and three saves respectively. North’s Robert Cannaway (two goals), Jack Peters (one goal) and Jayden Montgomery (one goal) played well in the loss.

Goalie Devyn Lavoie made eight saves. South finishes the regular season at 8-5 and North at 1-14.

CONCORD 11,

MERRIMACK 9

The Tomahawks (4-12) ended their regular season losing six straight. Jason Hostler led the offense with three goals and one assist. Declan Covell (one goal, one assist), Steven Petz (two goals), Kyle Crampton (one goal), Kyle Dunn (one assist), Matthew Todd (two assists), Shea Goodwin (one goal, two assists) and Conor Lanigan (one goal) played well offensively. Alex Griffin made seven saves between the pipes.

HOLLIS BROOKLINE 12,

ALVIRNE 4

Ben Dufoe (three goals, one assist), Jake Roy (two goals, one assist) and Joe O’Riley (two goals, three assists) led the way for the Cavaliers.

Others playing well in the win were Tommy Anderson (two goals), Garrett Struges (one goal, one assist), Andrew Torgerson (one goal) and Grover Farwell (one goal). Scott Walsh (six saves) and Ethan Ford (two saves) combined for eight saves in net.

GIRLS LACROSSE

NASHUA SOUTH 16,

NASHUA NORTH 2

The Panthers (10-6) enter the playoffs on a four game win streak after a dominant win over the Titans. South celebrated Cate Harrington, Maya Rioux and Aryanna Murray on senior night.

Scoring for South were Kaitlyn Harrington (five goals, one assist), Ella Benzekri (three goals, two assists), Olivia Johnson (three goals, one assist), Soleil Dubois (three goals), Bella Walsh (one goal) and Katie Garland (one goal). Rioux, Murray, Cate Harrington, Jenna Hamelin, Bailey Carroll, Morgan Preston and Vanessa Reeder led the defensive unit.

South plays Bishop Guertin on Monday in the first round of the playoffs.

BISHOP GUERTIN 14,

SOUHEGAN 1

The Cardinals finish off the season with a decisive road win against the Sabers, led by Rylee Bouvier’s three goals and two goals each by Nat Coutu (with an assist), Maddie Keating, Lindsay Hult and Mimi Pierce.

Single scores were by Katie Campel, Lauren Redfern, and Kate Simpson, while Steph Reap had an assist.

Abby Hawkes scored the lone goal for Souhegan

HOLLIS BROOKLINE 13,

WINNACUNNET 8

Alyssa Hill’s hot streak continues with a five goal and four assist performance in the Cavaliers final regular season game. Abbey Magnuszewski scored four goals and added two assists. Nicole Heiter and Abbie Ogren each tallied two goals. Ellie Maxwell, Brooke Allanach, Sammy Atlas and Morgan Broadhurst played well on both sides of the field.

HB begins the playoffs on Wednesday against Alvirne.

CONVAL 12,

CAMPBELL 7

The Cougars end the regular season with a tough loss on the road. Bailey Bourque had four goals, Jose Oberto had two goals and Elayna Montenero had one goal. Phoebe Drouin had 13 saves in net. Campbell ends the season at 5-8 and visits Trinity on Monday in a playoff matchup.

BASEBALL

SOUHEGAN 6,

MILFORD 0

The Sabers showed up for Senior night, as the three honorees took control of the game and shutout the Spartans. Nick Wilson found his groove early and tossed a complete game three hitter, while striking out 11.

In the second inning the Saber seniors started a two out rally when Wilson reached on an error which was followed by singles from David Rieth and Reese Colby leading to two runs. In the sixth, the senior trio had three straight singles to set the table. A single by Colin Burke, sacrifice fly by Dylan Dufour and a sharp single by Kyan Bagshaw plated four runs and closed out the scoring.

Milford had singles by Ben O’Connell and Brandon Shaw and a double by Nick Conforti. The Sabers (13-4) are set to wrap up the regular season hosting Salem Friday at 4. Milford is off until June 3 when they will host the winner of Monday’s tournament opener between Pelham and Hollis Brookline.

SOFTBALL

HOLLIS BROOKLINE 4,

MANCHESTER WEST 0

Austyn Kump’s 15 strikeout performance leads the Cavaliers to a shutout win on senior day. Kailey Disco had an inside the park home run, a single and two stolen bases to lead the offense.

Emily Sartell (double, RBI), Olivia Colantuonio (single, two RBIs), Abigail Guay (single, stolen base), Kump (double) and Katrina Lee (single) added to the great day at the plate for the locals.

MILFORD 8,

SOUHEGAN 2

The Spartans finish the regular season at 8-4 with a road win. Anna :Philbrick had two hits and two runs scored, while Keelie Wells had two hits with a run. Ali Fortin (two walks, run), Hannah Harrington (triple, run), Steph Stillwagon (hit, three walks, three runs), Madi Herbert (hit, run) all contributed. Herbert pitached a complete game, allowing a two-run homer but struck out eight.

BOYS VOLLEYBALL

HOLLIS BROOKLINE 3,

GOFFSTOWN 1

The Cavaliers (10-2) defeated Goffstown by the scores of 25-16, 18-25, 25-15, 25-14. Aidan Norris had 14 kills, Jake Laborde added nine kills and John Sommer tallied five kills. Max Marshall tossed 34 assists with three aces and Brian Szewczyk had four aces with one block.

HB will play Bishop Guertin on June 4 in the preliminary round.
