High School Notebook: Rivalry result upon further review

NASHUA – There’s a nice little rivalry going between the Nashua High School North and South girls track teams.

The kind you’d like to see between two close, competitive teams.

How close? Well, not as close as the originally posted and reported half a point difference between the two at Saturday’s tri-meet with Londonderry in LancerLand.

But close enough, as things were corrected to show the Panthers had themselves, instead of a 77-76.5 loss, a 78.5-75 triumph.

The discrepancy came when North was credited with a win in the 4×100 relay, which was actually won by the Panthers foursome of Soraya Ross, Melanie Stevens, Lyana Braswell and Mia Cruz. That group is one of the best in the state, currently, according to coach Catrina Loungee, ranked No. 1 in Division 1.

The mistake was discovered but because the postings were live it had to be corrected much later and the change wasn’t revealed until Sunday morning.

“During the meet, it was being worked on but was live so results were up all day,” Loungee said in an email. “Then at night (on Saturday) they had to hand correct.”

What has made the Panthers formidable?

Speed. Saturday’s meet came down to the speed events, as South was one-two in the 100 and 200 with Stevens winning and Ross second.

“We both have strong field event teams in our respective areas,” Loungee said. “North throws, us horizontal jumps (Natalie Boyle is a contender), and division contending relay teams (4×100, 4×400).

Should be fun at the end of this month.

LACROSSE, BASEBALL SHOWDOWNS

This is an interesting week coming up with matchups, and Tuesday is a day to keep an eye on.

That’s because the Bishop Guertin High School boys and girls lacrosse teams will be squaring off vs. Bedford in a doubleheader at Stellos Stadium.

The main event may actually be the 3 p.m. girls game, as it’s a battle of unbeatens, with Bedford coming in at 8-0, having outscored the opposition 136-32. The Cards, of course, are 7-0, having beaten Pinkerton twice, outscoring the opposition 114-36. The Cards had a tougher time with Pinkerton the second time around, winning 11-5 last Wednesday (17-5 the first time), and Souhegan has given both teams trouble. The Sabers split with Bedford but after falling 15-7 in the opener Souhegan played tougher, 10-8, in the rematch. And they lead BG 6-5 late in the first half just over a week ago before falling 14-8.

The Bulldogs had one other scare, just beating Portsmouth 10-9. The Cards, who have been paced by the scoring of junior Rylee Bouvier, aren’t scheduled to face Portsmouth this year.

In the boys contest, Bedford is really the only challenger left for BG to vanquish in the regular season. They’ve beaten Pinkerton twice and last week beat Exeter twice, although the second meeting this past Friday at Stellos was much closer, 12-6, than the 21-8 game a week ago in Exeter.

While BG is 9-0, Bedford comes in at 9-2, with losses to Pinkerton and Londonderry.

In a normal year, you’d have to figure BG and Exeter for two Final Four spots with Pinkerton, Bedford, and Londonderry three for the other two spots. But this year with the regional play, etc., there may be others in the mix.

Now, for baseball. There are two big Division II all-local meetings this week between Souhegan and Hollis Brookline. The 7-1 Sabers and 6-0 Cavaliers first tangle in Hollis on Tuesday at 4 p.m., then they meet again at Souhegan this Saturday at 2 p.m. Should be fun.

TOURNEY SITE UPDATES

The top seeds (lower number) will have home field in all the baseball and softball meetings, as of right now.

In boys lacrosse, however, there will be a neutral site for the finals. As of right now, Bedford High School’s Bulldog Stadium will be the site for the Division I and II finals, while Division III will have its final at Bank of New Hampshire Stadium in Laconia.

Girls lacrosse final sites have yet to be determined, but every other round will likely be at the higher seed (lower number).

Girls and boys tennis will have home courts for all the rounds until the finals. Divsion I boys and girls finals are at Pinkerton, Division II at Bedford, and Division III at the brand spanking new courts at Alvirne High School.

This was important, because you want the finals at spots that have plenty of courts so the match can flow. For example, some schools, like Bishop Guertin (three) have just three or four courts so singles can’t be played all at once.

For boys volleyball, it’s the higher seed, with a finals site to be determined. Nashua North has been the site in the past.
