The Bishop Guertin High School girls basketball team is getting used to teams playing them tough.

Tuesday night was just another example of that as the Cardinals pulled away in the second half from a tough Nashua South team 49-32 at the Belanger Gym to move to 13-0.

South led 12-6 early on, but managed just 20 points the rest of the way. Guertin held the Panthers to three points in the second quarter and led 22-15 at the half before pulling away to lead 39-27 after three periods.

“Very impressed with South’s toughness and compete level,” Guertin coach Brad Kreick said. “They made a bunch of shots early and had us out of our rhythm.

“All the credit in the world to their kids, they played a heck of a game.”

Indeed, the 4-4 Panthers, who were led by Maya Rioux’s 13 points and seven from Iruka Obinelo, hung tough but it was their fourth game in five days.

Guertin, meanwhile, had 12 points from Brooke Paquette, 11 by Kailee McDonald, and 10 by Maizie Barker. Meghan Stack, scoreless at the half, had eight in the second half.

“The girls played a great first half , took advantage of some offensive opportunities, and defended well,” South coach John Bourgeois said. “BG did a great job coming out of the half with their pressure defense and ran the floor well.

“At the end of the day we’re happy with our progress. … I couldn’t be more proud of this group for how much they improved this week despite linited practices.”

South wraps up the regular season Friday at Alvirne while BG hosts Nashua North.

The teams could see each other again, as BG plays the winner of next Tuesday’s South-Alvirne play-in game.
