Sabers cruise into second straight Division II field hockey final

By Hector Longo - Special to The Telegraph | Oct 30, 2020

The Souhegan High field hockey girls celebrate Thursday's 6-0 state semifinal win at Oyster River.

DURHAM — The hurdles keep popping up in front of the Souhegan High field hockey team, and the Sabers keep soaring over them.

Thursday afternoon, there was chilly rain, a nuisance of a road trip to the Seacoast and an upset-minded squad from Oyster River. The Sabers never blinked, rolling to a 6-0 state semifinal victory and a second straight trip to the Division II state title game.

“They came here on a very specific mission and they were all fired up to get it done, and they did,” said coach Kelli Braley, whose Sabers moved to a perfect 12-0 having surrendered just three goals all season.

“(The weather)doesn’t affect us at all. We’ve played games in this. We had a really great game against BG in the pouring rain and that kind of helped us too.

“Their determination, their desire and their mission is clear and it’s collective, so weather is not going to stop us.”

Knowing little of the Bobcats, who had won four straight coming in, Braley hit the film room. She made one pregame adjustment and hit it big.

“We moved Catie (Somers) up front and slid our center forward to a wing,” said Braley.

And less than a minute into play, it was 1-0 Souhegan as Somers set up senior Nicole O’Rourke.

“Scoring the first goal in the first minute was huge for us, it definitely set a tone,” said Braley. “They kept on pushing for the full 60, and that was good. I was proud of them.”

Somers scored the first of her three goals on a penalty stroke, doubling the advantage as the teams headed to the break.

“As far as I’m concerned a two-goal lead is the worst kind of lead,” said Braley. “It was essential that we netted another one pretty quickly to give ourselves some breathing room.”

And the Sabers pumped up the heat right from the start.

With 10:55 left in the third quarter, Souhegan swarmed and some quality effort in front of the net by Ava Van Ballegooyen yielded another penalty stroke.

Somers went high corner and made it 3-0 in a flash.

That was plenty.

Van Ballegooyen, Kelly Bishop and Somers would round out the scoring with assists going to O’Rourke and sophomore Ella Barrett.

“I was expecting (Oyster River) to swarm the ball, which they did especially in the middle of the field so we worked a lot on quick give-and-go passes which paid off for us huge in transition,” Braley said.

Goalie Annie Raduazzo finished with five saves in the win, allowing Souhegan to turn its sights on Sunday’s 2 p.m. final in Conway against Kennett.

Souhegan, a 3-0 loser in the state title game a year ago to Hanover, will be gunning for its first field hockey state title since 2007.

“It’s a new year, it’s a revived mission, and this was a very different semifinal than last year,” said Braley. “It’s a whole different season. It’s easy to not make that comparison (to last year).

“Whatever team we end up facing in the final (Kennett, which beat Merrimack Valley 2-0 yesterday in the other semifinal) we haven’t seen this year either. And we’re going to be on the road for it again, I swear we’re the only undefeated team to not host a playoff game ever.

Hopefully, we have one more to pull out and finish the mission.”
