BEDFORD – The memories were all coming back on Tuesday night for Bishop Guertin High School field hockey coach Erica Chareth.

They weren’t all that great, either.

“I played Windham in seventh and eighth grade in the championship,” Chareth said of her Amherst Middle School playing days. “And they were good. They’ve always been good.”

And the high school Jaguars were just as good last night, topping BG 3-0 in the Division I semis at Bedford High School.

In fact, since 2012, there’s only been one year when Windham didn’t have a team in the Division I or II finals, and the defending champions remain unbeaten at 9-0 during this abbreviated season. They’ll face Dover Sunday in this year’s finals.

The Jags dominated for most of the game, but while nursing a 1-0 lead, they survived BG’s best flurry right at the end of the half, goalie Kamdyn Clementi (four saves) scrambling but surviving.

“It was just keep going,” Jags coach Katie Blair said of her team’s mindset after that. “You’ve got to keep your foot on the pedal until the clock hits zero at the end of the game. They had a couple corner, come out, rejuvenated, and be ready to go.”

The Jags did just that, dominating the third quarter with two goals and forged ahead to a 3-0 lead. Maddi O’Hare, assisted by Sophia Ponzini, gave them a 1-0 lead with six minutes left in the half.

Ponzini also assisted on one of the two goals in the third by AAmy Lanouette, the other coming three minutes in by Cameron Livingstone, unassisted.

Guertin goalie Monina Tosi was under siege throughout with 10 saves.

“Monina played outstanding,” Guertin assistant coach Chris Hult said. “She was sprawling around all over the place like she usually does.”

That second Windham goal hurt.

“We were definitely trying to push the whole game,” Chareth said. “But when they got that second goal, we still didn’t back down, we tried not to drop our heads. … We were just unable to get the ball in the net.”

The Cards relied on their leaders, like Brooke Yabroudy and Lindsay Hult, in this one, as well as defender Frida Turriza. However she had to be helped off the field late in the third period with an injury.

Still, it was a good season for the Cards after strange circumstances. They had to take two weeks off early on due to virus concerns, yet they won four of six games, including a tourney win over Merrimack, to get here.

“Definitely after that two-week quarantine I was nervous for the team,” Chareth said. “But we came out firing, the regular season went well, the tournament came and the girls when it was do-or-die the girls stepped up.”

But Windham took a bigger step last night.

“We knew they were going to be good,” Chareth said. “And we tried to match that, but were unable to tonight.”
