Titans overcome slow start for 34-6 win over Cardinals

NASHUA — Luckily for the Nashua High School North football team, it’s not how you start, it’s how you finish.

And the Titans overcame a two-turnover start to finish with a resounding 34-6 win Saturday night over city rival Bishop Guertin at Stellos Stadium.

North, now 2-0, has so much firepower, led by Curtis Harris-Lopez, Jaden Espinal & Co. that it can recover from those things.

“Yeah but we don’t want to (have to) recover from self-inflicted wounds like that,” North coach Dante Laurendi said. “Very sloppy play coming out of the gate. Not just slow but sloppy. We have to work on a lot of that stuff.”

Remember, the Titans hadn’t played in two weeks thanks to last Friday’s Merrimack game cancellation.

“I don’t know,” Laurendi said. “BG was playing tough and physical, maybe that had more to do with it.

“It is what it is. We had an opportunity, and when you have those opportunities, you have to take advantage of them. … It took us a little while to wake up.”

But when the Titans did, it was pure points. Curtis Harris-Lopez, who killed a first quarter drive with an interception and then saw another one ruined by a bad snap/fumble, led the Titans to three second quarter scores. At halftime he had 168 of his 198 rushing yards, having scored two TDs and thrown for another. The bulk of his work was done as Brian Mwangi scored twice in the second half on Harris-Lopez-like runs of 34 and 4 yards.

And meanwhile, the Cardinals (0-3) continued to struggle on offense, with just 31 yards in the first half and 154 on the night.

“Early on the first drive, we get a couple of first downs, then we have an execution issue,” Cards coach John Trisciani said. “Then we’re trying to throw to a guy on a seam route, and he’s not running the right route. We’re not good enough to overcome it.

“What I’m noticing it’s an execution thing. If we get a penalty or loss of five on a play, it’s a drive killer. … It’s frustrating.”

Trying to spark the offense, Guertin went for it on fourth and sixth from its own 37 early in the second quarter and an incompletion gave Harris-Lopez the ball in a great spot and he ran it in right away for a 6-0 Titans lead with 9:24 left in the half.

Harris would later add a 20-yard TD run, and with no time on the clock found Espinal in the back of the end zone on a 17-yard strike to send North in at the half up 21-0.

Down 28-6, Guertin finally broke through when Cards QB Dylan Santosuosso hit his sophomore brother, Matt, who eluded a tackle and ran for a 35-yard touchdown with 1:14 left in the third quarter.

Other than that, the Titans defense was tough.

“The ‘D’ did a good job,” Laurendi said. “Kind of the only reason I felt we could snap out of the funk was because the ‘D’ was playing well, controlling the down and distances.

“Like I said, I’m glad our offense caught up.”
