Move over, high school football players. Yours isn’t the only game in town any more.

Yes, football enjoyed the weekend all to itself, but starting today (Monday) it has to share the spotlight – and in some cases, field time – with the rest of high school fall sports .

Practices begin today for boys and girls soccer, field hockey, girls volleyball, and boys and girls cross country. It’s not the off-season any longer.

There’s some intersting twists in the coaching ranks. Nashua North will have its third boys soccer coach in three years as last year’s coach, Thomas Prentice, has left to take the same position at Merrimack High School. In fact, the Tomahawks have revamped their soccer programs, as former Milford coach Russ Matthews, assisted by Betsy Hansen, has taken over the girls job.

Sam Holdsworth is now the new head boys soccer coach at North, replacing Prentice.

Also at North, last year’s field hockey coaching pair of Kat Previte and Casi Smith are flipping roles. Previte, for family reasons, will now be the assistant coach while Smith will now assume the head reins. The Titans left the Stellos Stadium turf with smiles last season, winning their first game in several years.

At Bishop Guertin, the new field hockey coach is former Windham coach Katie Bourque, who won five state titles with the Jaguars. Former coach Dakota Bilodeau gave up that sport to focus more on softball and her other duties at the school. Bilodeau lately may be familiar to girls lacrosse fans as she’s coached Pinkerton the last four seasons.

“I know the legacy and success of BG athletics, and I’m excited to get the season underway,” Bourque said in a school release when her hiring was announced back in June.

Of course, the non-football fall sports season ended with perhaps the best local high school sports event of the year, Bishop Guertin’s 1-0 double overtime win over boys soccer city rival Nashua South in the Division I finals in Manchester. Guertin graduated a lot of that team, while Nashua South appeared set to return several starters. In fact, the two teams meet at Stellos Stadium on Sept. 1.
