HB football wins first; BG and HB enjoy soccer sweeps

The Hollis Brookline High School football team can finally flash a collective smile.

The Cavaliers picked up their first win of the season on Saturday, topping Sanborn 40-7.

Marc-Andre Thermitus had close to if not over 300 yards rushing for the second straight week, with four touchdowns. Blake Bergerson had close to 200 receiving yards and hooked up with QB Drew Gryniewicz for two TD receptions.

Besides those two TD passes, Gryniewicz threw for 200 yards. HB has its first home game on its new turf field on Friday night at 7 vs. Timberlane.

In other area games, Bishop Guertin swept Nashua North in soccer, as did Hollis Brookline vs. Souhegan.

GIRLS SOCCER

BISHOP GUERTIN 3,

NASHUA NORTH 1

Katie Boudreau had a pair of goals and Martha Lord added a single tally as the Cardinals improved to 5-0 with their second win over the Titans in the week.

Assists went to Hailey Barker, Grace Kelly and Hannah Lord.

Emilee Deleo scored the lone goal for North , now 2-2, on a penalty kick.

SALEM 2,

MERRIMACK 1

Emma Valluzzi scored the lone Tomahawks goal, assisted by Isabella Saxon. Siobhan McMakin and Alexis Best also played well for Merrimack, still looking for its first win at 0-4.

HOLLIS BROOKLINE 2,

SOUHEGAN 1

The Cavs got a goal from Sofia Walle, off a long feed from Sohia Warren with just four minutes left to snap a 1-1 tie and improve to 3-1.

HB had to rally after Souhegan (1-3) took an early lead on a header goal by Greta Caulton off a free kick 14 minutes in.

The Cavs tied it 14 minutes later on Paige Magnusewski’s goal off a Madeline Boudreau corner kick.

Cavs keeper Abigail Magnuszewski had seven saves, including a great tip save with the game tied late. Meghan Flannery led a good defensive effort for the winners.

MILFORD 3,

PELHAM 0

Rachel Gizzonio had two goals and assisted on a tally by Ava Hutcheons

Also for the 4-0 Spartans, Mikayla Thompson and Marissa Sage dominated the middle of the field and Renee Wilson and Maddi Howard played well defensively. Spartans keeper Caroline Tessier recorded another shutout.

BOYS SOCCER

BISHOP GUERTIN 2,

NASHUA NORTH 1

The Cards (2-3) rallied after North took a 1-0 lead on a goal by Aedan Pickett, assisted by Cameron Rodriguez about 20 minutes in.

Grevaan Singh got the equalizer 10 mnute later and Zach Morris got the game winner in the second half off a Colin McCarthy corner kick.

Aiden Laurendeau played well in goal for the Cards, helping to hold off the Titans (0-4) as North’s Amos Karnuah had multiple scoring opportunities.

HOLLIS BROOKLINE 2,

SOUHEGAN 0

The Cavaliers improved to 2-0 as Nate McEvoy got credit for a goal that was deflected off a Saber defender in the first half and Ethan Smith scored an insurance goal late in the second half (77th minute).

Souhegan keeper Ryan Lockitt kept Souhegan in the game making seven clutch saves and the Cavs fired 19 shots in his directon. HB goalie Jackson Koopman had 10 saves for the shutout.

MILFORD 5,

PELHAM 0

Noah Matthews had three goals, while Zack Smith and Sam Williams also scored for the Spartans, now 2-1-1.

Assists went to Connor Winder and Ryon Constable. Alex Gagnon also played well for Milford.

CAMPBELL 3,

SANBORN 2

Justin Edmunds headed in a long throw-in at the 10 minute mark of the second half to snap a 2-2 tie and give the Cougars (4-2) their third straight win.

Mike diCarli and Wyatt Hemming also scored for Campbell, who got seven saves in goal from Jack Noury.

FIELD HOCKEY

PELHAM 6,

MILFORD 1

Milford’s single goal was scored by junior Allison Demmons in the third quarter as the Spartans fell to 0-3 on the short season.

However, on the good side, it was the team’s “Pink Game” to raise awareness and funds for Breast Cancer, and the Spartans were able to raise to raise $373.

GIRL VOLLEYBALL

CAMPBELL 3,

MILFORD 1

The Cougars recovered after Milford won the first set to take the next three, 25-16, 25-17, 25-21, for their third straight win (4-3) while handing the Spartans their first loss (3-1).

Chloe Steiniger (three aces, 11 ills, 10 digs, 18 assists), Catherine Carignan (seven aces, nine kills, five digs), Elayna Montenero (three aces, two kills, 14 digs) and Bria Soule (two aces, six digs) were standouts for Campbell.

The Spartans were led by Izzy Unsworth (10 kills 11 digs), Briana Arnoldy (10 kills, two blocks, four digs) and Madison Murphy (26 assists, seven digs, three kills, three aces).
