Merrimack takes third in Milford/Souhegan meet

In all, 13 teams came knocking for the annual Milford/Souhegan Invitational Wrestling Tournament. Winchester, Mass., took home the team championship, while three area wrestlers were crowned champions.

Merrimack High, the top area finisher, grabbed third place, paced by a pair of champions. Anson Dewar, at 152 pounds, and Griffin Ostrom, at 195 pounds, were perfect on the day to claim titles. Ostrom won four matches, and Dewar went 3-0.

Milford’s Deacon Currier defended his home mat with pride. The Spartans’ 126-pounder rolled to the title with three victories.

Hollis Brookline didn’t have a champ, but showed some impressive balance with a half dozen place winners. Milford was fifth overall and Souhegan was 10th.

AT CONVAL EARLY BIRD

The Cardinals easily captured the four team event with 275 points, ahead of Bow (159), Plymouth (135) and Nashua North (115).

The Cards got first place finishes from Anthony Fernandez (106), Connor MacDonald (132), Steve Bouchard (138), Andrew Ha (170) and Aiden Szewczyk (220).

James Murphy (152), Josef Homola (170) and Matt Ha (182) took thirds, while fourths went to Ben Stawasz (145) and Charlie Bellavance (195).

Guertin had three sixths: Calvin Jozokos (126), Zach Connerty (220), and Nick Connerty (285)

The Titans were paced by Matt Oliver (second at 106), Ben Haight (third at 113) and Max Ackerman (third at heavyweight).

Also for North, Zaedon Crocker was fourth as a non-scorer at 182. The following Titans took fifths: Dimitri Moreno (145), Tyler Griffin (195) and Dylan McIntyre (220).

Swimming

BISHOP GUERTIN

BOYS, GIRLS SWEEP

The Cardinal boys bested Alvirne 73-48, Laconia 75-8, Merrimack 74-39 and Winnacunning by a 67-28 tally.

Key wins were by the 200 medlay relay and 200 free relay team of Matt Crane, Connor Donoghue, Ivan Dodar and Brenden Dion. Donoghue picked up wins in the 200 IM and breastroke while Crane won the 50 and 100 free. Dodor picked up wins in the 100 fly and 100 backstroke.

Meanwhile, the Cardinal girls also earned a sweep, beating Alvirne 126-42, Winnacunnet 95-85, Merrimack 99-79 and Laconia 134-8.

The top swimmer for the Cards was Olivia Shusta, who won the 200 IM and 100 backstroke.

Bowling

SOUHEGAN SECOND

The Sabers finished second with a 1541 for two games, 125 pins better than their opener last week, knocking off Goffstown but falling in the first round of baker 2-1, beating Dover 176-146 but then losing 151-127 and 122-121 at Dover Bowl.

Individually, Nick Giannakapoulos rolled a career best 207, with a 383 series. Wil Jaques had a 336 series, while Zack Dean added a career best 308 series with a 190 second game. Julianna Torres added a 187 game, 293 series.

In the JV match, Souhegan’s Emma Maurais roled a 141 and 140, while Annie Raduazzo had a team high 146 and Ezra Darling finished with a 238 series.

Indoor Track

CAMPBELL STRONG IN OPENER

The Campbell girls took fourth in a seven team meet, and finished top six to score points across the throws, jumps, sprints and distance races.

Cassie Hemming won the 1000, while Megan Whitnell took second.Sierra Reinitzer took second in the shot put, while Ava Houle was second in the long jump, sixth in the 55, and was the lead leg of the second place 4x160m relay along with Eveline West, Morgan Wagner and Vanessa Mangiafico.

Also for the girls, Dasia Kham took fifth in the 300, Michelle Freeman sixth in the 1500, and the team of Cassie Hemming, Brooke Sullivan, Gabby Kim-Levesque and Hanna Keane fought for sixth in the 4×400.

In the boys meet, Josh Hoffman won the shot put, while Tyler St. Onge took second in the 300, third in the 55 hurdles, and anchored the third place 4×160 relay along with Dominic Picone, Ryan Hart and Anthony Holder.

Also, Keegan Reynolds placed sixth in the 600, and Trevor and Tyler Scopelites were second and third respectively in the 1000.

Campbell travels to Phillips Exeter Academy on Wednesday.
