Nashua North track out for more golden moments

By Hector Longo - | Apr 5, 2018

It is rare these days to find a high school, maybe outside of the Pacific Northwest, where outdoor track is the true, “King of Spring.”

Somebody might want to tell that to Nashua north boys coach Art Kobs, who is absolutely turning track into a must-compete sport for the Titans.

Once again Kobs, whose club won the state indoor Division I title a year ago, and finished second outdoors last spring, has reeled in a deep, talented roster for the spring, making North a track and field power again on the state level this spring. And the news gets even better.

“We have sophomores and freshmen who will be making a potential impact on this team and for years to come,” said Kobs.

Of course, North, once again, is built to go the distance – literally.

Senior David Vorbach has to own his own personal trophy case at North with all the titles he’s racked up over four seasons.

The Columbia-bound distance ace is ready to go out on a high note, much in part to the dogged pursuit provided to him on a daily basis by classmate and fellow standout Max Ireland.

Brazden Ellis is the third captain on what should be an exciting North team.

A quality bunch of throwers, led by

seniors Razz Alkalay and Kyle Reeder will be the strength of a Nashua South squad that got hurt bigtime by the graduation of state champion high jumper/hurdler Terrell Lewis.

Alvirne coach Tom Daigle is hoping there is strength in numbers.

“We are looking forward to an exciting season. We have a large squad with many talented athletes,” said Daigle.” We hope to have an exciting and competitive season and look forward to see the talented athletes we have give their best and reach the level of competition that they work so hard for.”

Broncos fans have to be wondering just what freshman sensation Kyle Gora will accomplish in his third sports season. Gora was the varsity starting quarterback for Alvirne in the fall and earned quick respect as one of the region’s top wrestlers, one of only nine New Englands qualifiers from the Telegraph area.

He’ll be sprinting and throwing this spring.

After finishing 10th in the state last year, Bishop Guertin will look to a young group of returners to hopefully bump up the Division I ladder.

Merrimack High is another program with solid numbers, built up in the younger grades.

“This is a very young and talented group of student athletes,” said coach John Snell, now in his 37th year. “Our goal is to help them realize their potential as the season progresses.”

In Division II, Milford will look to improve with an influx of talented young athletes in the program and a senior quartet of Blake Audibert, Will Shepard, Mike Boucher and Ben Valliant, who should all regularly rack up points.

“We have 40 boys, our largest team ever,” said coach mike Wright. “We’re looking for a top-five finish at states.”

Souhegan coach John Eastman is pleased with the growth of his boys program this spring with a dozen new freshmen joining the ranks.

“Our boys team has improved in numbers for the spring and should be more competitive than last year,” said Eastman. “But but most of the additional athletes are ninth graders, so it will take time for them to excel against the older athletes they face all season.”

Campbell, second, in Division III last spring, does not have tremendous depth, but there are big-timers in this bunch, none bigger than Trevor Gomes, the reigning indoor and outdoor state long jump champ.

Javelin throwers Spencer Snell and Nathan Bazzocchi should continue their assault on the school record book this spring, while distance man Jeff Allen is the defending state 1600 meter champ.

Captain Jacob Yurcak is back to lead Wilton-Lyndeborough. He’s a state qualifier in the high jump, who will be sprinting this spring as well.

Warrior Junior Sam Bailey is a triple threat as a thrower, having earned a fourth place in the shot put last year in the state meet.
