Don’t rubberstamp Sununu

By Bob Jarnis - Dunbarton | Oct 24, 2020

That’s what Dave Wheeler would do if elected to the Executive Council. “Stand with Governor Sununu” states his campaign literature.

Wheeler doesn’t understand the role of the Executive Council with a constitutional responsibility to oversee State Government ensuring judicial and agency head appointments are appropriate as well as approve state expenditures over $10.000. Apparently, Sununu doesn’t understand this either. During his terms in office he has disbanded the non-partisan Judicial Screening Committee to advise the Governor on Judicial appointments. He continues excessive use of No-bid Contracts and consistently requests the Council to retroactively approve contracts he has already executed.

Sununu has spent over $575 million of the $1.25 billion Federal CARES Act funding for the State without any oversight from the Executive Council.

Thankfully, Debra Pignatelli does understand the Executive Council’s role. During her time on the Council she has initiated public hearings for State Agency head appointments, fought No-bid contracting and continuously opposed Sununu’s unilateral expenditure of CARES Act money, including $37 million he blithely handed to Commissioner Edelblut to do with what he wants without any input or oversight.

With his cavalier approach to spending and total disregard for the Executive Council, Sununu has allowed the state’s financial oversight to run amuck. Mr. Wheeler would allow the Governor’s lone-wolf actions to continue.

To ensure accountability and not rubberstamp Sununu, keep Deborah Pignatelli on the Executive Committee.
