Enough with the ducks already

By Staff | Jan 14, 2014

I realize the Legislative session has just started and state news is still a little slow, but I think you’ve made enough political hay with Rep. Campbell’s duck incident.

I’m not excusing Campbell completely, but it was an accident and there’s plenty of blame to spread around.

Fifteen mph is not that fast, and most animals, wild or tame, would get out of the way. Could the ducks have been distracted from watching for cars because there was food spread about on the road? Were there signs around saying “don’t feed the wild ducks” or at least, “feed the ducks only in designated areas”?

I have several ponds on my property, with nary a duck or goose in sight, so it’s a stretch to call these “wild” ducks. Has the hotel management encouraged the ducks to stay through the winter as a tourist attraction? Shouldn’t they be taken inside to protect against predators? If these ducks really are semi-tame, shouldn’t there be a barrier between road and pond?

The Telegraph is scandal-mongering while ignoring larger issues that affect people. Where are articles about environmental issues that affect both humans and wildlife? How many ducks died last year because of lead poisoning? How many people? Why are there not daily articles about how much federal money we’re losing because of Republican opposition to federal healthcare, or the sitting senator who receives a salary from the LGC, or legislators who introduce industry-funded ALEC legislation as their own? How about some real reporting?
