Trial for suspect facing multiple domestic violence-related charges scheduled for next week
Clarence Phillips II, age 42, of no fixed address, Nashua
NASHUA — Jury selection in the case of Clarence Phillips II, who is accused of assaulting, strangling, threatening and restraining a woman he knows, is underway with the trial itself set to begin Tuesday, March 14, according to his case file.
Phillips, 42, who has no fixed address, has been jailed since his arrest the night of Nov. 19, shortly after police responded to a motel on Spit Brook Road upon receiving reports of an assault taking place in one of the rooms.
The charges on which Phillips is scheduled to go to trial include two Class B felonies and seven Class A misdemeanors.
The felonies — second-degree assault-domestic violence, and criminal restraint — accuse Phillips of grabbing the woman, described as an intimate partner, by the neck, strangling her, throwing her on a bed and kneeling on her, according to the indictments and his court file.
The misdemeanors — four counts of domestic violence-related simple assault; and one count each of obstructing the report of a crime and criminal threatening — accuse Phillips of pushing the woman into the hotel room, hitting her in the stomach and head, following her to the motel office where she tried to call police, and hanging up her phone, according to the documents.
The alleged victim was taken a local hospital, where she provided a formal statement, and gave police permission to search and photograph the motel room.
Phillips, after being transported to police headquarters for booking, declined to provide a statement to detectives, police said.
