Merrimack High student clubs benefit locals

By LORETTA JACKSON - Telegraph Correspondent | Dec 31, 2022

Opportunities abound in the New Year for students to do good and socialize through special-interest clubs at Merrimack High School. Dance, theater, creative writing and finance clubs have aficionados, as does broadcast, marketing and business clubs.

“There are so many great clubs here,” said Pam Foster, a veteran of 40 years in teaching. “We believe in the power of our youth and know they will take us far.”

Clubs well populated include the Random Acts of Kindness service club. Members recently collected from fellow students and staffers donations of 40 hand-tied plush blankets, insulated gloves, socks and other warm winter apparel for distribution on Christmas Eve to some of Manchester’s homeless at Veteran’s Memorial Park.

Among the Random Acts of Kindness club’s participants are Foster (co-advisor), Eleni Floras (co-advisor), Charvi Chandrasekaran (club leader), Fareeha Mohammed, Matthew Thompson and Madeline Doyle. The group also includes Samarth Chandrasekaran, Ismail Mohammed, Timothy Bevis and Sara Chhetri, along with Isabella Salerno, Kaylie Palmer and Sasha Pathania.

The Envirothon club also is a popular choice for many students. It is focused on supporting the environment. The club hosts an annual competition focused on aquatics, wildlife, soil conservation and forestry. Members also perform seasonal outdoor cleanups and other projects of substance.

Meanwhile, the Interact club is the teen branch of Rotary International. The organization founded in 1905 currently operates in 109 countries through around 10,000 clubs. Merrimack High student members traditionally are commended for assisting Merrimack Rotarians at an annual Christmas tree sale. More than 300 Canadian Balsam fir trees and Fraser fir trees are purchased by supporters.

Information on the MHS student clubs that promote socialization, community support and volunteerism can be had by emailing Pam Foster: pam.foster@sau26.org.
