HUDSON — Firefighters from several surrounding towns were called in Monday morning to assist Hudson crews in battling a two-alarm fire that appears to have broken out in the garage of a split-entry residence at 27 Richman Road.

Vehicles in the garage were destroyed by flames, while a living space over the garage sustained heavy damage.

It wasn’t clear whether anyone was home when the fire broke out, but no injuries were reported. Crews did come across an unresponsive dog, and performed CPR in an attempt to revive it, but were ultimately unsuccessful.

Numerous calls reporting the fire began coming in just after 9:30 a.m., prompting dispatchers to send additional resources on the initial response.

That included Hudson Engines 2 and 1, Ladder 2, Tanker 1, the chief, deputy chief and fire prevention officer; Engine 4 and a deputy chief from Nashua; and Pelham’s Tanker 1.

First to arrive was the deputy chief, who reported heavy fire showing from the two-stall attached garage and called for a second alarm.

Called in on the second alarm were Nashua Ladder 3; Londonderry Engine 2, Tanker 1 and a battalion chief; Windham Engine 3, Tanker 1 and the chief; Derry Engine 2 and Car 1; Salem Engine 1; and an AMR ambulance.

The crew of Hudson Engine 2 stretched a hose line into the living space over the garage, but after proceeding a short distance into the space, found the floor to be spongy, prompting them to pull back.

Other crews in the meantime deployed hose lines and attacked the heavy fire coming from the garage. They were able to re-enter the building to knock down the remaining flames, while a ladder truck crew vented the roof of the garage, releasing the heavy heat and smoke that had built up.

Second-alarm crews stretched hose lines into the main house and the basement, where they found some extension of the flames but were able to knock them down in short order.

In order to establish a water supply, crews set up a tanker shuttle from a fire hydrant on Dracut Road to the scene.

While the fire was declared under control roughly an hour after crews arrived, several crews spent a considerable amount of time on overhaul operations, checking for flames that had spread through walls and into the roof.

The cause remains under investigation. A fire prevention officer and a town building inspector were on the scene much of the day conducting their investigation.
