GREENLAND — A young Maine man has a December court date as a result of his arrest early Sunday morning on charges that accuse him of more than doubling the posted 65 mph speed limit on I-95 and having an open bottle of an alcoholic beverage in the backseat, police said.

Darryl Germain, 20, of Portland, faces one count each of reckless operation and transportation of alcoholic beverages by a minor, Class A misdemeanors on which he is scheduled to appear in Portsmouth district court on Dec. 19.

Germain, who was booked on the charges and later released on personal recognizance bail, caught the attention of state Trooper Cameron Vetter, of Troop A, who, just before 3 a.m., “observed a 2021 Nissan Armada traveling at a high rate of speed north on I-95 in Greenland.”

Vetter “subsequently confirmed the speed of the vehicle at 137 mph,” according to police.

Vetter was able to catch up to the Armada, a higher-end SUV that goes for around $55,000 new, and pulled it over.
