LONDONDERRY — A Milford man is charged with offenses including drunk driving and reckless conduct after he allegedly traveled the wrong way on I-93 for nearly two miles before his damaged vehicle gave out near mile marker 18.8, police said.

Douglas Lippert, 54, reportedly got onto I-93 southbound at Exit 5, the North Londonderry exit, but for reasons that remain under investigation he allegedly began traveling north toward oncoming southbound traffic.

Lippert is charged with one count each of driving while intoxicated, conduct after an accident, reckless conduct, and reckless driving, police said, adding that he was taken into custody after troopers came upon his disabled vehicle sitting on the side of the highway.

Lippert sustained minor injuries, police said, and was transported to Elliot Hospital in Manchester for treatment.

Police didn’t say whether Lippert was admitted to the hospital or was treated and released, or if he was held in jail or posted bail following the booking process.

They did say that Troop B headquarters began receiving multiple calls from drivers reporting a silver sedan going the wrong way on I-93. Initial reports indicated the vehicle entered the highway at Exit 5 and began traveling the wrong way, police said.

As troopers were headed to the area, additional calls came in reporting that “multiple vehicles had been forced off the road in the area of mile marker 17,” police said.

The driver of one of those vehicles, identified as Paulo Santos Moreira, of Medford, Massachusetts, told police he was forced to take evasive action to avoid colliding head-on with the wrong-way vehicle.

Moreira’s vehicle struck a guardrail as a result of the evasive maneuver, damaging the vehicle, police said. Moreira was uninjured in the collision.
