NCC’s Aviation Department chosen for FAA training
NASHUA – One week after Nashua Community College announced the launch of its Remote Pilot Certificate preparation course, the Federal Aviation Administration selected the school’s Aviation Department to participate in the Unmanned Aircraft Systems-Collegiate Training Initiative.
“It’s a college training initiative, the FAA will have us on a list of schools that have drone training, so that’s helpful for promotion,” said Professor Douglas Mitchell, chairman of the Aviation Department. “In terms of any new training they have, we’ll be receiving new information. If any new educational grant comes up relating to drone training, we’ll get that information right away.”
To qualify for the UAS-CTI program, schools must offer a Bachelor’s or Associate’s degree in UAS or a degree with a minor, concentration or certificate in UAS.
NCC launched its first eight-week Drone Piloting program on Aug. 31 with six students. The course will be offered again for the 2027 spring semester.
“Students are mostly interested in the drones for photography, but there are also delivery capabilities too. You can send them on a course, and they will avoid obstacles,” said Mitchell. “The course at NCC is primarily online, but includes an in-person component to practice flying the drones. A lot of classes will run with five to 10 participants from real estate or surveyors to police and firemen.”
