Michael Berencsi, 50, former Calumet resident

MANCHESTER — The resident of the Calumet transitional housing unit found unresponsive from an apparent overdose back on July 10 has died at a local hospital, officials said.

Michael Berencsi, 50, was sentenced to State Prison in March 2021 and was moved to the Calumet in February, according to a Department of Corrections spokesman. Berencsi’s sentence stemmed from his arrest on a second-degree assault charge in 2020. He had a maximum release date of May 2026.

Transitional housing units such as the Calumet House were formerly called halfway houses. The facilities are the final stage of a resident’s incarceration as they prepare to transition back into the community, the spokesman said.

Corrections officers found Berensci responsive early the afternoon of July 10. “Life-saving measures were immediately started, including calling for an ambulance, providing cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), using an automated external defibrillator (AED), and administering Narcan,” according to the spokesman.

Berensci was transported to the hospital in critical condition, where he passed 10 days later.
