Back-to-back DUI arrests Thursday in Hollis
David Retter, 36, of Hollis
HOLLIS — Police Thursday afternoon tracked down two vehicles whose operators were allegedly seen by witnesses driving erratically not far from the center of town.
According to Chief Brendan LaFlamme, both drivers — one of them a 77-year-old woman — were charged with driving under the influence shortly after officers located their respective vehicles and spoke with them.
The arrests, LaFlamme said, occurred within 90 minutes of each other.
Police received the first report at about 2 p.m. from a caller who described a vehicle being operated erratically on Depot Road, he said. The witness told police the vehicle struck, and ran over, a “pedestrians crossing” sign near Nichols Field, and that the vehicle was traveling “completely on the wrong side of the road.”
Upon locating the vehicle, officers spoke with the driver, identified as Florence Murphy, 77, of Hollis. They said she allegedly displayed signs of impairment, and after a brief investigation, they arrested her on the DUI charge, as well as charges of conduct after an accident, criminal mischief, and driving without a valid license.
Murphy was booked on the charges and later released on personal recognizance bail pending a future appearance in Nashua district court.
LaFlamme said that around 3:30 p.m., police received a call from a person who reported a suspected intoxicated person inside a business, which wasn’t identified.
The suspect allegedly left the store before police arrived, and was last seen driving down Ash Street. Officers located his vehicle moments later in the parking lot of the Hollis Post Office, LaFlamme said.
They spoke with the driver, identified as David Retter, 36, of Hollis, and subsequently took him into custody on the DUI charge.
Retter was also booked and later released on PR bail pending a Nashua district court appearance.
LaFlamme said the department “would like to thank the alert citizens who reported both of these incidents.”
