SEABROOK — One man was killed, another critically injured and a third was last seen running away from the area of 19 Boynton Lane in a Monday morning shooting that rattled this small seacoast town on the Massachusetts border.

Police said the shooting occurred at the 19 Boynton Lane address, which is next to the access road to the Southgate Plaza and not far from Lafayette Road, or Route 1, the town’s main thoroughfare.

Police have confirmed that a suspect is in custody. They hadn’t identified him as of Monday night.

Relatives of the man who was killed told news outlets they don’t know what led to the shooting.

Police said the as-yet unidentified man was found dead in the driveway of the home.

Relatives of the man critically injured said he was taken to Portsmouth Regional Hospital, where he was listed in critical condition.

A man who lives behind the house where the shooting occurred said he heard a shot fired around 8 or 8:30 a.m., followed closely by another shot. He said he stayed inside his camper because it sounded like the shots were fired right outside.

In an update later Monday morning, Seabrook Deputy Police Chief Kevin Gelineau confirmed a suspect was in custody.

“We don’t believe there is any danger to the community at this time, but we do ask people to remain away from the area,” Gelineau said Monday afternoon.

“We are still working to make the scene safe … that’s why you see a large police presence.”

As a precaution, stores in the Southgate Plaza were put into lockdown, but the order was lifted later Monday morning. Some businesses were still closed at noon.

Seabrook public schools were temporarily placed into “secure campus mode” as a precaution, school officials said, adding that the order was lifted a short time later.
