MANCHESTER — Melvin Campbell, a Nashua resident with a lengthy history of arrests for robbery, drug possession, witness tampering and receiving stolen property, is under arrest again, this time in connection with Thursday morning’s standoff with police at a Merrimack Street residence.

Campbell, 47, last known address of 58 1/2 Chestnut St. in Nashua, faces charges of felon in possession of a dangerous weapon; falsifying evidence; resisting arrest; and violation of parole, according to police.

Police didn’t provide Campbell’s arraignment date or bail status, but given the nature of the charges and his history he is presumably being held in jail on preventive detention pending the arraignment.

The incident that led to Campbell’s arrest began around 6:45 a.m., when police were called to 168 Merrimack St. for a report of an argument involving a man with a gun.

When officers arrived, a man fitting the description of the suspect opened the front door of the apartment building and stepped out, but quickly went back inside, police said.

Police were familiar with the address — officers had responded there just two days earlier after receiving a report of a threat with a firearm, police said, adding that no suspects were located at that time.

Based in part on that information, police who responded to Thursday’s morning’s incident promptly set up a perimeter around the residence and called in members of the SWAT team.

The department’s Bearcat was also called to the scene, police said.

Officers used a loudspeaker system to talk to the suspect and try to coax him out of the building.

They eventually identified the suspect as Campbell, and learned that he was wanted by probation and parole officers for an alleged violation of parole, police said.

Meanwhile, police deployed a robot and a drone into and around the residence to try and determine Campbell’s whereabouts inside the building.

It was a K-9 unit that eventually succeeded in locating Campbell, by sniffing him out as he allegedly tried to hide in a bedroom, police said.

He was taken into custody without further incident, police added.

They also said that police located a BB gun during a search of the apartment.
