MILFORD – The as-yet unidentified drivers of two cars sustained what are believed to be serious injuries when the vehicles collided head-on Sunday afternoon on Route 13.
Milford firefighters, medical personnel and police were called to Route 13 in the area of Comstock Drive and Berkley Place shortly before 1:30 p.m., and upon arrival located the two heavily-damaged vehicles.
Firefighters determined both drivers were trapped in their respective vehicles, and both had to be extricated, officials said.
Based on initial assessments of the drivers’ conditions, a D-HART medical helicopter was requested to the scene as firefighters conducted rescue operations.
Meanwhile, police from Amherst and Brookline assisted Milford officers in closing a section of Route 13 and rerouting traffic around the scene.

Once the victims were freed, officials canceled the medical helicopter, instead opting to transport both to local hospitals.
Information gathered at the scene indicates that the vehicle that was headed south on Route 13 was traveling in the northbound lane when the crash occurred.
Milford Fire Chief Ken Flaherty indicated that both victims had serious injuries, although based on assessments at the scene the injuries did not appear to be life-threatening.
Route 13 was closed in both directions for about an hour.
The accident is under investigation by Milford police.
