Nashua man, initially charged with 9 mostly domestic-violence related offenses in 2020, found guilty by jury of just one violation-level crime

NASHUA – A case that began Nov. 13, when Hudson police arrested Nashua resident Israel Carrillo for reportedly driving down the middle of the road at about 2 in the morning, came to an uneventful end Friday when a jury convicted him on one count of negligent driving – a violation-level offense.

Carrillo, now 33 and with a last known address of 12 Jackson St., was initially charged with 9 offenses – two felonies, five Class A misdemeanors and two violations – but by the time his jury trial got underway early last week, just three of those charges remained pending.

On Friday, after deliberating for just under two hours, jurors returned the guilty verdict on the negligent driving charge, and not guilty verdicts on one count each of second-degree assault – domestic violence, a Class B felony, and domestic violence, a Class A misdemeanor.

According to Carrillo’s case summary on file at Hillsborough County Superior Court South, the original 9 charges that police filed included two felony counts of second-degree assault – domestic violence; three counts of violation of a protective order and two counts of domestic violence, all Class A misdemeanors, and two violation-level counts of negligent driving.

While the notations in the case summary aren’t specific as to what led to the 9 charges being whittled down to three come trial time, it was likely the result either of the prosecutor and defense attorney coming to an agreement, or the judge making a ruling on a motion that was favorable to the defendant.

While the Hudson officer who arrested Carrillo didn’t include the name of the street where he said he pulled Carrillo over, he did write that as he approached the vehicle to speak with the occupants that “both driver and passenger began exiting the vehicle yelling.”

The passenger, a 26-year-old woman who lives in Hudson, told the officer she was “actively being assaulted by the male driver …,” later identified as Carrillo, according to the report.

The officer, Matthew Horton, wrote that he recognized the woman from previous police interactions and was aware that “active bail conditions preventing Carrillo from contacting” the woman were in effect.

Carrillo allegedly told Horton he was aware of the bail conditions, at which time Horton took Carrillo into custody, he wrote.

Meanwhile, a backup officer who had arrived at the scene was speaking with the woman, the report states.

She told the officer she “had been assaulted by means of biting and strangulation … she described having Mr. Carrillo wrap his arm around her throat, causing her to not be able to breathe,” the officer wrote.

The officer reported identifying “fresh markings and bruising around (the woman’s) neck,” the report states.
