United Way of Greater Nashua distributes $192,424 in Emergency Food and Shelter Program (EFSP) grant funds to local organizations

By Staff | Apr 18, 2021

NASHUA – United Way of Greater Nashua is pleased to announce that it has successfully distributed Emergency Food and Shelter Program Grant (EFSP) funds to local service agencies that needed supplemental funds to assist with meeting their agency’s objectives. The EFSP grants were made possible due to federal funds awarded to Hillsborough County, New Hampshire through the Department of Homeland Security (DHS)/ Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) under Phase 38 of the Emergency Food and Shelter National Board Program.

A National Board chaired by FEMA and administered by United Way Worldwide consisting of representatives from six non-profit and faith-based organizations distributed funds allocated by Congress to assist food and shelter programs in high-need areas around the country to broaden their reach. A Local Board comprised of local representatives of the National Board member agencies reviewed grant applications and recommended which local service providers should be awarded funds. The local board allocated funds for the following six categories: served meals, other food, supplies & equipment, rental assistance, utility assistance, and other shelter. Emergency Food and Shelter Program funds can be used to supplement and expand current resources but not to substitute or reimburse continuing programs or services and cannot be used to supersede funds from other sources already budgeted. According to Liz Fitzgerald, Director of Community Impact for United Way of Greater Nashua who serves as the local board chair and administers the EFSP grant for Hillsborough County, “These funds make an important difference in our county’s ability to meet basic human needs for our most vulnerable community members. It can be challenging to precisely know and plan for how many people may have a crisis and need support each year. And it is difficult to reject people when budgeted funds deplete. Our local board reached out to engage both small and large programs in need throughout the county that can benefit from this aid.”

In order to be eligible to receive the grant, local agencies had to meet the following requirements: 1) be private, voluntary non-profits or units of government, 2) be eligible to receive federal funds, 3) have an accounting system, 4) practice non-discrimination, 5) have demonstrated the capability to deliver emergency food and/or shelter programs, and 6) if they are a private voluntary organization, have a voluntary board and meet all other criteria specified in the Emergency Food and Shelter Program manual.

The following local partners have received funds: Catholic Charities (Care Givers), Family Promise, FIT-New Horizons, Front Door Agency, Granite YMCA, Grow Nashua, Harbor Care, Keystone Hall, Nashua PAL, NSKS, SHARE Outreach, ORIS, St. John Neumann, Salvation Army Manchester, Salvation Army Nashua, St. Joseph Hospital Employee Pantry, SNHS, The Way Home, Town of Peterborough Meals to Go, Victory Women of Vision, Waypoint, and YWCA Manchester.

United Way looks forward to further rounds of EFSP funding to further supplement the social services delivery of programs in our communities. United Way of Greater Nashua is a Charity Navigator / GuideStar top rated charity serving Southern New Hampshire since 1930. More information can be found at www.unitedwaynashua.org
