Survey finds New Hampshire ahead of other states combating COVID-19

By ADAM URQUHART - Staff Writer | Apr 8, 2020

CONCORD – States across the country have implemented various safety measures to help mitigate the spread of coronavirus disease (COVID-19) and New Hampshire ranks among the top ten with the most aggressive measures in limiting virus exposure.

According to WalletHub’s updated survey, which includes all 50 states and the District of Columbia, the Granite State now ranks in ninth place. The organization was able to determine these rankings by comparing each state and the District of Columbia across three different dimensions including, prevention and containment (75 total points), risk factors and infrastructure (20 total points) and economic impact (5 total points). In evaluating these dimensions, the organization used 51 metrics, with each metric graded on a 100-point scale. From there, the organization determined the weighted average across these metrics to calculate an overall score for each.

However, these rankings do not mean states at the top of the list are in better shape than others as far as rate of infection goes. New York, for example, is currently ranked in first place for most aggressive measures in limiting virus exposure, yet has been deemed an epicenter for COVID-19. At the same time, New Jersey is another hard hit area of the country, and the state ranked fifth on the organizations list.

Moreover, half of New England’s states ranked in the top ten in this survey, with Massachusetts ranking eighth and Rhode Island ranking sixth. Vermont, Connecticut and Maine did make the top 20.

As far as New Hampshire’s ranking goes, the Granite State came in eighth for prevention and containment, twelfth for risk factors and infrastructure and thirty-fourth for economic impact. While New Hampshire currently ranks ninth as of Monday, this figure represents a slight decrease in standing compared to the previous survey results. As of March 23, New Hampshire ranked fourth, and prior to that, the state ranked eleventh as of March 16.
