Nashua family holds out hope for return of son, who has been missing since mid-January
NASHUA – Months have passed since Michael Jones, 34, was reported missing to Nashua police, and still, his whereabouts remain unclear.
“I can’t talk about it – all I do is cry,” his mother Susan Springer said. “I mean, it’s been months.”
Family members of Jones turned to the Nashua Police Department to report him missing on Jan. 23. Springer maintains hope her son will be found.
She said Jones suffers from severe anxiety and has, at times, struggled with drug use. Springer said Jones has been to a rehabilitation center in the past. At the time of his disappearance, she said police may have believed he had again gone to rehab.
Springer said that roughly a week before she reported him missing, the two of them went out to lunch. She said he was very happy that day, sporting a leather jacket and jeans.
Later that week, she tried calling her son, but his phone went to voicemail. From there, she began calling his friends and people he knew, but no one had seen or heard from him. That’s when she went to the police department with two pictures and reported what every parent fears: That their child is missing.
Jones’ last Facebook posts are dated Jan. 16, the same day he met his mother for lunch. According to a press release issued by Nashua police in May, he was last seen in Nashua on Jan. 17.
However, Springer said police should have gone to the media immediately with her son’s picture. She said she believed officials were just waiting because, perhaps, Jones was in rehab.
“You don’t know if they’re alive; you don’t know if they’re dead; you don’t know what happened,” Springer said.
At the time Jones went missing, he was staying with friends in the area of Harbor Avenue in Nashua, and was also actively contacting rehabilitation services for treatment. His mother said he did not have his own apartment at the time after he and his girlfriend split up, so he was staying with friends. Springer said Jones also had a friend on Allds Street with whom he would stay.
Police reported that Jones was last seen wearing jeans, a leather coat and white sneakers in that May press release. Police also acknowledged his mental health and substance use issues in that release.
Springer said the last time she saw Jones, he was clean shaven, although often has a beard. She said he is about 5’8 and 170 pounds, with brown hair and blue eyes.
“All I know is, somebody out there has to know something,” Springer said.
Springer said Jones comes from a loving family that cares about him, and that he has always been very bright. She remembers how he would call her and tell her how much he loved her.
While police work to find answers regarding the disappearance of Jones, there is another missing persons case that is also active – Michael McClain has been missing since April.
“We have no status updates for either Jones or McClain at this point,” Nashua Police Lt. Daniel Mederos said.
Nonetheless, if anyone has information regarding Jones, he or she may contact the Nashua Police Department at 603-594-3500. They can remain anonymous by contacting the Nashua Crime Line at 603-589-1665.
Springer also said people may contact her at 603-275-4348.
