Gov. Lynch declares state of emergency for New Hampshire

By Staff | Oct 29, 2012

CONCORD – Gov. John Lynch declared a state of emergency in preparation of battling Hurricane Sandy that’s expected to deliver high winds, high water and likely scattered power outages later Monday through Tuesday.

Earlier Monday, Lynch had said he did not believe it was necessary to take this step. On Sunday, he mobilized 100 National Guard troops to assist cities and towns with storm planning and response.

But making this declaration at this time as other New England states have done makes it more likely New Hampshire would receive federal disaster assistance quickly if that proves necessary.

The state may experience winds of up to 60 mph and rain totaling 2 to 4 inches during the initial period of the storm. Substantial additional rain may follow throughout the week.

Lynch has said this storm could result in power outages, flooding, road closures and widespread debris.

“While the exact path and severity of the storm remain uncertain, it is clear New Hampshire will experience a significant weather event and I urge everyone to be prepared,” Governor Lynch said. “It is important that all New Hampshire citizens and visitors monitor the situation closely and make necessary preparations.”
