5 Nashua schools honored
Nashua School District Superintendent Mark Conrad told the Board of Education last week that Dr. Crisp, Fairgrounds and Ledge Street elementary schools, Fairgrounds Middle School and Nashua High School South will be honored by the Parent Information and Resource Center.
The schools are being recognized for getting parents involved in the academics of their children.
Each principal will be presented with a certificate of recognition at an event Monday.
This helps to kick off Parent Involvement in Education Month in New Hampshire.
Hoof it or bike it
As it turns out, October is also Walk and Bike to School Month, and several schools are encouraging students to skip the bus or car for a day.
Amherst Street, Bicentennial, Dr. Crisp, Ledge Street and New Searles elementary schools have events planned this month for International Walk to School Day, according to the Nashua School District.
Understanding mental illness
The Greater Nashua Mental Health Center at Community Council will host a free training designed to help mental community aid professionals better serve people with mental illness.
Susan Mead, the Community Council’s community education and outreach coordinator, will moderate a panel discussion about understanding mental illness, available treatments and responding to individuals and families coping with mental health illnesses, according to the Community Council.
The training is part of Mental Illness Awareness Week, which runs Oct. 3-10. The training, “Helping People Living with Mental Illness,” will take place at 100 West Pearl St. from 9-10:30 a.m. Thursday .
Dr. Hisham Hafez, the Community Council’s executive director and chief medical officer, plus the council’s directors of child and adolescent services, older adult services, assessment and brief treatment, and substance abuse services, will be on the panel, according to the Community Council.
