Shaheen reintroduces Healthy Indoor Air Act to establish energy efficiency standards for consumer room air cleaners

By Staff | Feb 3, 2023

U.S. Sen. Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH) today reintroduced the Healthy Indoor Air Act to establish a federal energy efficiency standard for consumer room air cleaners under the Energy Policy and Conservation Act. Air purifiers have recently grown in popularity, particularly consumer room air cleaners to improve indoor air quality in homes, schools and workplaces during the pandemic and in areas prone to wildfires. This legislation would substantially reduce energy use, provide manufacturers with uniform standards for air cleaners and ensure effective, quality products for consumers.

“Every American should have clean air to breathe. From the climate crisis creating air pollution to the pandemic demonstrating the importance of indoor air quality, it’s time for innovative solutions to improve the air we breathe while ensuring energy efficiency. That’s why I’m reintroducing legislation to establish energy efficiency standards for air cleaners,” said Shaheen. “As consumer air cleaners become more common across households and public spaces, uniform standards for energy efficiency will help consumers save money and ensure quality, effective products.”
