UMass Lowell, state and city of Lowell leaders observed Arbor Day on Friday, April 30 with the planting of a hornbeam tree outside Olney Hall on the university’s North Campus. The tree is the last of 12 to be planted to beautify the Riverside Street corridor. The event symbolized the ongoing sustainability partnership between UMass Lowell, the city of Lowell and state partner agencies, and served as a backdrop to announce the expansion of the Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation’s Greening Gateway Cities Program to Lowell. Leaders attending the event included, from left, Marc Ghen, urban forester, Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation; Jane Calvin, executive director, Lowell Parks and Conservation Trust; Patricia McCafferty, UMass Lowell senior vice chancellor for university relations; Steven O’Riordan, UMass Lowell vice chancellor of finance and operations; and Lowell Mayor John Leahy.
