TRASH OR TREASURE?

The Nashua Historical Society has a new exhibit, “One’s Man’s Trash is Another Man’s Treasure,” in the display case at the front entrance to the Florence Speare Museum, 5 Abbott St. Brought in from the collection of Rose Markiewicz, you might ask “Why would anyone keep that stuff?” Yet, as quirky as they are, these items have a place in history. They are representative of the mementos people have in their attic, basement or garage. The exhibit will be on display through September. HARBOR CARE DINING TO DONATE NIGHT

Applebee’s Restaurant and Harbor Care Health & Wellness Center are teaming up for a Dining to Donate night from 4-9 p.m. July 23. Present the flier to your server at the beginning of your meal and 15 percent of your sale will go to the clinic. The center serves low-income and homeless adults in Greater Nashua. SYMPHONY NH YARD SALE

Symphony NH is hosting a community yard sale on Aug. 3, but they need your help. For items of quantifiable value, they will be happy to create a donation receipt (tax-deductible) for your records.

MOTOR MANIA

Check out the hottest car show of the summer: The seventh annual Motor Mania event is revving its engine and ready to showcase classic cars and motorcycles that belong to car enthusiasts from across New England. Noon-4 p.m. July 27 at Holman Stadium, 67 Amherst St.

Cruise with Motor Mania: Registered participants are invited to rumble through downtown Nashua to Holman Stadium to show off your vehicles before setting up for the main event. Registration is $10 per vehicle. Lining up for the cruisin’ will begin at 9:30 a.m. at Granite Clover Self Storage, 6 Caldwell Drive, Amherst. There is no additional charge to participate in the Motor Mania Cruisin’. Onlookers can catch the procession, as vehicles are due to arrive at Holman at about 11 a.m. Vehicles will compete for one of 12 Motor Mania trophies. HOUSEHOLD HAZARDOUS WASTE & ELECTRONICS COLLECTION

A household hazardous waste and electronics collection will be held 8 a.m.-noon Aug. 3 at the Nashua Public Works garage, 9 Stadium Drive. Open to residents of Amherst, Brookline, Hollis, Hudson, Litchfield, Merrimack, Milford, Mont Vernon, Nashua, Pelham and Windham. $10 user fee per vehicle covers up to 10 gallons or 20 pounds; additional charges for electronics recycling. HIRING OUR HEROES VETERANS EVENT

The 2013 Hiring Our Heroes veterans hiring event will be held at Aug. 8 at the Frank Jones Conference Center at the Nashua Armory on Daniel Webster Highway. This event is being conducted by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation, local chambers of commerce, the Department of Labor Veterans Employment & Training Service, New Hampshire Committee – Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve, New Hampshire Employment Security, the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, the American Legion, NBC News and other local partners. A workshop for veterans and other military job seekers that focuses on resume writing, tips for successfully navigating hiring fairs, military skill translation and interviewing will start at 9 a.m.

CURE WITH HOPE WEEKEND EVENT

The Big 1 Ice Cream Stand, 185 Concord St., will host a Cure With Hope Weekend event on Aug. 10-11. Cure With Hope was started by Rebecca Rose Tabat, of Nashua, at age 19 after she was diagnosed with a fatal form of cancer. The Big 1, which was home to a few of Tabat’s best friends, decided that in her memory, it would hold a weekend full of raffles, giveaways, face painting, a Nashua Fire Rescue truck and more to aid Cure With Hope and ChaD in the Pediatric Inpatient Refresh Project, which provides movies, DVD players, stuffed animals and more to children undergoing cancer treatments. AMERICAN HEROES INVITATIONAL GOLF TOURNAMENT

‘SHOP FOR A CAUSE’ BENEFIT FOR SENIOR ACTIVITY CENTER

Macy’s at the Pheasant Lane Mall is partnering with the Nashua Senior Activity Center in Macy’s eighth annual “Shop for a Cause” charity shopping event on Aug. 24. Customers can buy shopping passes for $5 from the Senior Acivity Center and enjoy a day of special discounts, events and entertainment at Macy’s. NH RUN/WALK TO BREAK THE SILENCE ON OVARIAN cancer

Join the New Hampshire Chapter of the National Ovarian Cancer Coalition for its eighth annual Run/Walk to Break the Silence on Ovarian Cancer on Sept. 8 at Greeley Park. The 5K looped course begins at Greeley Park and winds through Hills Ferry Road and Manchester Street and returns back to Greeley Park for the finish. The course is mostly flat and has sidewalks. Walkers may choose this course or a 2-mile course. A post-race party will include entertainment, refreshments, a chance to win prizes and an awards ceremony. ANNUAL KELLY MANN MEMORIAL 5K AND 3K WALK

The eighth annual 5K and 3K walk held in memory of Kelly Mann, who lost her life to domestic violence, will be held 9-11:30 a.m. Sept. 28 at Sunset Heights Elementary School, 15 Osgood Road. All proceeds will go to Bridges: Domestic & Sexual Violence Support in its effort to eliminate domestic and sexual violence and to provide a safe and empowering environment for victims and survivors. MULTICULTURAL FESTIVAL

PROGRAMS AT FAMILY RESOURCE CENTER

• Ultimate Play Date, a drop-in program for birth to age 5 and their parents, is offered 10-11:30 a.m. Tuesdays. Free. Preregistration strongly suggested.

• The Parenting Journey, a 12-week program to make connections with your past and how it relates to your current relationships and interactions with your children, is held 6-8 p.m. Wednesdays. Exact start date determined when 10 individuals register.

FITNESS UNIVERSITY SCHEDULE

Fitness University announced its free running and exercise clinic schedule for 2013. Developed by the Gate City Striders in 1989, and sponsored this year by Southern New Hampshire Health System, St. Joseph Healthcare and Dartmouth-Hitchcock Nashua, Fitness University consists of a series of clinics held in the late spring and early summer for children ages 3-14, teaching the value of exercise and nutrition.

Eight free clinics will be held Tuesdays at Nashua High School South. In lieu of Finals Day, kids will run a fun mini-race at the final clinic on July 30.

Remaining clinics are July 23 and 30 on the upper field. Clinics run from 6-7 p.m. for ages 3-4 and 6-7:30 p.m. for ages 5-14.

FAMILY PROGRAMS AT ARLINGTON STREET UMC

TOUCH-A-TRUCK EVENT

On Aug. 3 from 10 a.m.-2 p.m., youngsters will have an opportunity to touch a truck at Nashua High School South on Panther Drive. Touch-A-Truck provides a unique opportunity for children to explore vehicles of all types – public service, emergency, utility, delivery and those that are just plain cool – all in one place. Children will be able to touch, climb on and ask questions about their favorite trucks in a safe, supervised environment. Trucks scheduled to attend include a police command vehicle provided by the Nashua Police Department, fire trucks from Nashua Fire Rescue, a trolley provided by Nashua Transit and a variety of service vehicles from the Nashua Division of Public Works. Additional trucks continue to register. A suggested donation of $5 per car- or vanload of visitors is requested as admission. Donations are used to support programs offered for children in Nashua. CHILDREN’S WINTER GARDEN

WHITE WING PRESCHOOL AND KINDERGARTEN

RECREATION DEPARTMENT

2013 SPRING WALKING PROGRAM

The 2013 spring walking program will be held through July. The walks are held Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at different locations. All walks start at 9 a.m.

Mondays: Meet at the Whipple Street entrance to Mine Falls Park.

Wednesdays: Meet at the Lincoln Park entrance to Mine Falls.

Fridays: Meet at the Gilson Road parking lot at the Nashua River Rail Trail. (The parking lot is best accessed by taking Countryside Drive off West Hollis Street. Gilson Road is at the end of Countryside. The parking lot is near the intersection of Countryside and Gilson.)

2013 PUBLIC TRIPS

The Nashua Parks and Recreation Department is taking registrations for trips in 2013.

Red Sox game: 7 p.m. Sept. 4 versus the Detroit Tigers (left field pavilion box seats), with 40 tickets at $105 a person. Price includes bus transportation.

New York City trip: Dec. 7. $60 a person. Bus leaves Greeley Park at 6 a.m. and arrives in New York City at 11:30 a.m. Bus arrives back at Greeley Park at 11:30 p.m.

A $30 nonrefundable deposit is required for each trip. Deposit is to be paid before name goes on trip roster.

AARP NASHUA CHAPTER RECRUITING NEW MEMBERS

People interested in helping to improve the lives of seniors in Southern New Hampshire are invited to attend an upcoming Breakfast Exchange Club meeting. The Breakfast Exchange Club provides support through a variety of programs for the Greater Nashua area’s seniors, including Days of Caring Shopping Sprees, Heat Up/Cool Down energy assistance programs, cookouts and other social activities held at senior housing locations throughout the area. The club holds several fundraisers during the year in support of its outreach programs. CIVIL AIR PATROL

During World War II, Civil Air Patrol members protected the U.S. by flying 24 million miles, finding 173 enemy U-boats, attacking 57, hitting 10 and sinking two, dropping a total of 83 bombs and depth charges. Cadets can learn to fly planes or gliders. If a cadet earns the Mitchell Award, he or she can join the Air Force three ranks higher than others who enlist. Meetings are 6:30 p.m. Thursdays in Nashua. ‘CLICKETY CLACK’ TROLLEY EXHIBIT

An exhibit of old photos of electric railway cars is on display in the Nashua Historical Society’s wall cases on the first floor of Nashua City Hall, 229 Main St. All items are from the extensive collection of Nashua historian Frank Mooney and are on display through June. Free.

COMMUNITY QUILTING GROUP

The Community Quilting Group meets 2:30-4:30 p.m. Thursdays at The PLUS Co. The group is open to all teens and adults, beginner or experienced, disabled or not disabled. FIRST-TIME HOMEBUYER EDUCATION CLASSES

Neighborhood Housing Services of Greater Nashua holds eight-hour first-time home-buyer classes on Saturdays once a month at its offices at 63 Temple St. Class topics include developing a budget, understanding credit, working with real-estate and insurance agents, mortgage options, home inspections and home maintenance. Course is accredited by NeighborWorks America and is required by many banks and government affordable housing and grant programs. The attendees are given a certificate to provide to their lenders. FREE CHURCH DINNER

The Unitarian-Universalist Church of Nashua, 58 Lowell St., hosts free church dinners from 5-6 p.m. on the third Sunday of every month. These dinners are part of the church’s ongoing effort to end hunger and homelessness in the greater Nashua area. All are welcome.

HOLLIS ARTS SOCIETY GALLERY

The Hollis Arts Society displays art in the conference rooms at the Greater Nashua Mental Health Center at Community Council, 100 W. Pearl St. Art is available for purchase. NEW ROTARY CLUB

A new Rotary club in development, presently named the Souhegan Valley Happy Hour Rotary Club, meets 5:30-6:30 p.m. Mondays at the Hampton Inn on Amherst Street. RSVP FIXIT CORPS VOLUNTEERS AVAILABLE

The RSVP (Retired and Senior Volunteer Program) Fixit Corps is a program assisting seniors (60 years old and older) or disabled homeowners with minor home repairs and maintenance. Any senior or disabled homeowner may call for assistance. Priority is given to those seniors who lack the financial and/or physical resources to complete these repair jobs on their own. Service examples include: installing a grab bar, repairing a leaky faucet, replacing a porch step, replacing light bulbs, etc. Labor is provided by the RSVP Fixit Corps volunteers without a set fee to the client. SENIOR CENTER THRIFT STORE

The Thrift Store at the Senior Activity Center, 70 Temple St., is open 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Monday through Friday, selling men’s and women’s new and gently used clothing. Other items include clothing accessories, home decor, linens, paperback books. Specials include twice-monthly $3-per-bag sales for selected clothing. Donations are always accepted. SOCIETY OF AMERICAN MAGICIANS

The Society of American Magicians meets 7-9 p.m. the third Wednesday of the month at the Church of Christ, 97 Farley Road. Open to all. Members will perform the latest magic and prepare for one of the many charitable shows that are scheduled yearly.

SOUTHERN NH STORYTELLING GUILD
