NASHUA — For her service during the past 17 years, Jaela Solis, the downtown director of the Nashua Police Athletic League, was recently named the organization’s national Staff Member of the Year at the Night of Champions Gala.
According to Nashua PAL, the accolade recognizes “extraordinary dedication, leadership and impact on youth and community.”
In addition to her position as downtown director, Solis is a mentor to countless young people who are living in some of Nashua’s most impoverished neighborhoods.
Fatima Garcia, 17, described the impact that Solis has had on her life.
“Jaela sees everyone for who we are, not for our mistakes and loves us unconditionally. She always has given me hope and pushes me to be the leader I am today,” said Garcia. “Jaela has always been there, not just for me, but for everyone. She spends so much time helping us and showing what it means to be cared for and supported, even for kids that no one cares about, they know they can rely on Jaela. She might not realize it, but she makes such a big impact on our lives and our community.”
Many former PAL members, who are now adults, remain in contact with Solis and often turn to her for guidance.
“Once a PAL kid, always a PAL kid,” said Solis. “When I started 17 years ago at PAL, I never could have imagined where it would take me. I couldn’t imagine the opportunities that I’ve gotten or how rewarding it would be. I think I’ve gotten more from the PAL kids than they have from me. I’ve learned so much about myself from them and through them, I don’t think I ever want to leave. It’s a great honor to receive this award.”
Solis is now welcoming second-generation PAL members and is passing along the same opportunities that she provided to their parents years earlier.
PAL Executive Director Shaun Nelson said Solis embodies the “very heart” of the organization.
“Her impact cannot be measured simply in programs or years of service, it’s measured in the lives she has changed, the trust she has built and the hope she gives our youth every single day. We are so grateful to Jaela for everything she does,” he said. “On behalf of Nashua PAL’s staff, volunteers and youth, we congratulate Jaela Solis on this incredible national honor.”
