NASHUA — Christina Hurley, founder of Less Leg More Heart, was recently crowned Ms. New Hampshire North America.

Hurley’s life changed forever 10 years ago when she was diagnosed with Popliteal Artery Entrapment Syndrome.

According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, “Popliteal Artery Entrapment Syndrome occurs when the popliteal artery, the main artery for the lower body, is compressed by muscles behind the knee, restricting blood flow through the legs.”

It is estimated that the disease affects less than one percent of the American population.

Despite having more than a dozen surgeries, everyday tasks remained impossible. The only option was to amputate Hurley’s left leg below the knee.

Three years later, she launched Leg Less More Heart to address the needs of other amputees, which, at the time, were not being met. The nonprofit organization now assists with gaps in insurance coverage, emergency recovery and the cost of prosthetic limbs, which can be up to $100,000.

As Ms. New Hampshire North America, Hurley will represent the Granite State at the International Ms. North America Pageant in Orlando, Fla. from July 14-16.

“This platform gives me a microphone,” said Hurley. “I intend to use it to amplify the voices of amputees and to restore movement for individuals who deserve access to mobility, dignity and community. This is about more than a pageant. It’s about showing what New Hampshire stands for — resilience, compassion and lifting one another up.”

Prior to the competition, Less Leg More Heart will be launching Crowned for a Cause: Road to Nationals. In addition to fundraising, the campaign is geared to bolster awareness about the emotional toll of losing a limb and the cost of prosthetics.

“As Ms. New Hampshire North America, I have the opportunity to represent a community that deserves greater visibility and support.” said Hurley.
