Gate City Light Award accepting nominations
NASHUA – Nominations are currently being accepted for this year’s Gate City Light Award, which honors a Nashua-based nonprofit organization for exceptional service and dedication to the community.
Nominations will be accepted through May 1. The Gate City Light Award is voted on annually in conjunction with National Volunteer Recognition Week, which will be observed from April 19-25.
Each year, the Gate City Light Award shines a spotlight on a local nonprofit whose volunteers go above and beyond to make a meaningful difference in Nashua. Nominations may be submitted by anyone who has been positively impacted by a nonprofit’s work, including volunteers, donors, clients, community partners, or supporters. The nomination form is available at https://www.nashuanh.gov/541/Gate-City-Light-Award.
The selection committee encourages thoughtful, detailed nominations. Respondents are asked to share specific examples of the organization’s programs, the impact of its volunteer efforts, and any inspiring or heartwarming stories that help illustrate the nonprofit’s contributions to the community.
Last year’s Gate City Light Award was presented to the Humane Society for Greater Nashua in recognition of its compassionate and tireless commitment to the welfare of animals. Supported by a dedicated volunteer network, the organization provides shelter, medical care, adoption services, foster programs and community education, strengthening the human, animal bond throughout Greater Nashua.
The 2025 runner-up award was presented to the Nashua Senior Activity Center, recognized for its vital role in promoting healthy aging and community connection for older adults in Nashua. Powered by a committed group of volunteers, the Center offers a wide range of fitness, educational, and social programs that support the physical, mental, and social well-being of the city’s senior population. Volunteers play an essential role in welcoming participants, supporting events, leading peer-based classes, and extending the Center’s outreach into the community.
The 2025 Unsung Hero Award was awarded to The PLUS Company in recognition of its impactful, behind-the-scenes work supporting individuals with developmental disabilities in living full, meaningful, and inclusive lives. Through a strong commitment to independence, dignity, and community engagement, The PLUS Company provides employment support, life-skills training, and recreational opportunities. Staff and volunteers work side by side with participants to remove barriers, foster independence, and build pathways to opportunity–quietly making a profound difference across the Nashua community.
Organizations that have received the Gate City Light Award within the past five years are not eligible for nomination in 2026.
“The city of Nashua is fortunate to have an incredible nonprofit community doing powerful, meaningful work every day,” said Sara Ceaser, chairwoman of the Mayor’s Volunteer Recognition Committee. “We look forward to reviewing this year’s nominations and reading the stories that highlight the compassion, commitment and heart of our community.”
