Saint-Gobain agrees to help fund watermain extension
LONDONDERRY – State and town officials recently reached an agreement with Saint-Gobain Performance Plastics Corp. to extend a watermain two miles north along High Range Road from Royal Lane to Alexander Road.
“This agreement is another important step in our efforts to hold Saint-Gobain accountable and assist Londonderry residents affected by (per-and polyfluoroalkyl substances) contamination,” said state Attorney General John Formella. “We remain steadfast in our efforts to protect access to clean water for all Granite Staters.”
Saint-Gobain has agreed to contribute approximately $1.71 million to the project. This will fulfill the terms of the Consent Decree that was issued to the company in 2018 regarding PFAS contamination.
“Saint-Gobain is committed to acting as a responsible environmental steward in the communities in which we live and operate,” said a company spokesperson. “We are pleased to have been able to work collaboratively with the town of Londonderry and NHDES to bring this project to fruition and support larger infrastructure goals in the region, in addition to continuing to fulfill our existing commitments under the Consent Decree.”
Londonderry’s $4.3 million share will be covered by the New Hampshire Drinking Water and Groundwater Trust Fund.
Extending the watermain will connect 350 properties west of High Range Road to the community water system managed by Pennichuck Water Works. The watermain will also provide service to homes east of High Range Road if necessary.
Residents who are ineligible for a safe drinking water alternative from Saint-Gobain and have private wells with PFAS concentrations that are above the state and federal contaminant levels can apply to receive up to $5,000 to install a water treatment system specifically designed to remove PFAS. Residents may also qualify for up to $10,000 for a service connection to a public water system.
