Flakes of peeling white bark stand out almost three-dimensionally against the darker hues of “Beautiful Blue Birches,” an oil painting created with pigment and persistence by Evalyn Maghakian of Brookline.
The substantial oil is displayed among dozens more artworks of various media rendered by selected, mostly local, artists at Creative Ventures Gallery teaching center and artists’ studios at 411 Nashua Street in Milford.
“Doing art makes you think of the natural world in a whole different way,” said Elizabeth “Betsy” Craumer, a resident of Bedford who opened CVG in 2015 and specializes in pastel landscape painting. “Creating art is good for the soul — it shows what’s important to you.”
Exhibited at CVG are works ranging from oil paintings and acrylics to pastels and graphite pencil renderings. Sculpture and mixed media works grace the space and most are for sale, modestly priced to support locals.
Craumer, an acclaimed landscape artist, along with fellow resident artist Alex Haas, a Mont Vernon printmaker of renown, join other experts in offering to the public a variety of classes, artist talks and workshops.

Individual rental cubbies for working artists are prized by practitioners. A spacious, brightly lighted classroom invites dabblers, novices and professionals alike to refine their skills among the like minded.
Teen drawing, needle felting, technical drawing and a “Painting for Fun” class, along with a “Friday Homeschool Youth Art Class” and a “Friday Homeschool Teen Class” are well populated. An easy to navigate website and monthly newsletter tantalize the tempted and update current and potential patrons.
“Don’t be afraid to try something new, just take a class to learn an unfamiliar art form with confidence.” Craumer added. “It’s not what people think of your art, it’s how you feel about it.”
