Historical Society to host The Unusual and Fantastic: World War II Textiles and Artifacts at the Abbot-Spalding House

By Staff | Jul 9, 2024

NASHUA – Clothing from the 1940s including uniforms, gowns and other artifacts will be featured at the Abbot-Spalding House on July 13 from 2:30 to 4 p.m.

This is the Nashua Historical Society’s July opening of the Abbot-Spalding House Museum, a true gem of Nashua and the former home of the Father of Nashua Daniel Abbot.

Textile expert and exhibit co-curator Janice Fronko, is excited to display artifacts from the society’s collection including, “our mystery piece, we believe, might be an American fashion designer Claire McCardell gown.” Fronko has been working with fellow textile expert and co-curator Paula Lochhead. According to Lochhead, the leather flight pants with thick sheep’s fleece are particularly unusual and are on loan from Milford Army Navy Surplus. Both Fronko and Lochhead will be available for questions during the open house.

Located at 5 Abbott St., the Abbot-Spalding House was built in 1804-05. It exemplifies the Federal and Colonial Revival styles of architecture in Nashua, with the interior featuring fine woodwork and cabinetry. The house was acquired by the Nashua Historical Society in 1978.

Tours are $10 for non-members and free for members.

Come early and watch the extraordinary hour-long documentary titled: “At Home and Abroad: Nashua and World War II” starting at 1 p.m. in the Speare Museum, located adjacent to the Abbot-Spalding House. The documentary and self-guided tours of the Speare Museum are free and open to the public.

Free parking is available either in The Nashua Historical Society’s parking lot or on the street.
