BEDFORD — Scott Defreitas, 52, of Nashua, died when his vehicle burst into flames on the Everett Turnpike on the afternoon of June 13.
According to State Police, the Mercedes SL 500 Defreitas was driving struck the Bedford Toll Plaza and caught fire at approximately 3:15 p.m. Upon arriving at the scene, Bedford firefighters found that Defreitas was receiving CPR after several motorists risked their own safety to pull him from the flames. Merrimack firefighters and the state Department of Transportation also responded to provide mutual aid.
Despite the efforts of first responders, Defreitas was pronounced dead at the scene.
The preliminary investigation suggested that Defreitas was traveling southbound when his vehicle collided with a concrete barrier at the toll plaza causing the fire. No other vehicles were involved and no one working at the toll plaza was injured.
Four E-ZPass lanes were closed for approximately three hours to allow crews to clear debris and process the scene, according to police.
No additional information was available as the crash remains under investigation. Anyone with additional information is asked to contact State Trooper Kevin Gazlay at Kevin.J.Gazlay@dos.nh.gov.
