United Way launches Wee Read United to foster early childhood literacy
NASHUA – The United Way of Greater Nashua recently announced the launch of Wee Read United, a program dedicated to promoting literacy and the love of reading among preschool students ages three to five.
The program will run from June 17 to August 23, offering weekly story times in various easily accessible locations throughout Nashua.
Wee Read United provides a unique opportunity for parents to engage in reading activities with their children, helping to instill a lifelong love of books and learning. Research has consistently shown that early childhood reading is crucial for cognitive development, language skills, and academic success. According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, reading aloud to children from birth can enhance their vocabulary and comprehension skills, preparing them for school and beyond.
“We believe that fostering a love of reading in young children sets the foundation for their future success,” said Kathy Hesse, lead volunteer of the Wee Read United program. “Our Wee Read United program is designed to bring families together and provide them with the tools and encouragement they need to make reading a part of their daily lives.”
The program will feature three outdoor story time venues, inviting families to enjoy the beautiful summer weather while participating in these enriching activities. Attendees are encouraged to bring chairs and blankets to enjoy the sessions comfortably. The locations and times for these outdoor story times are as follows:
-Tolles Street Community Gardens, 7 Salem St.: Mondays at 10 a.m.
-Centennial Pool, 24 Sargents Ave.: Wednesdays at 2:30 p.m.
-Monahan Manor, 17 Myrtle St.: Thursdays at 10 a.m.
Additional times and locations will be announced on our Facebook page as they become available. The “Wee Read United” Facebook page is available at https://tinyurl.com/WeeReadFB.
