United Way to host June mental health talk for older adults

By Staff | May 14, 2024

NASHUA – The United Way of Greater Nashua recently announced its upcoming talk for older adults titled: “Expanding Your Understanding of Mental Health.”

The event is scheduled for June 7 from 10:30 a.m. to noon at the Merrimack Public Library, 470 Daniel Webster Hwy. in Merrimack.

The event will provide a stigma-free environment for individuals of all ages, with a particular focus on older adults, to learn and engage in discussions about mental wellness. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, suicide rates among adults aged 65 and older are higher than any other age group in the United States. Additionally, older adults often face unique challenges such as social isolation, chronic illness, and the loss of loved ones, which can contribute to mental health concerns.

Attendees will have the opportunity to explore various resources and initiatives aimed at promoting mental health awareness and support. The event will feature presentations from prominent organizations such as the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention’s New Hampshire chapter, highlighting their innovative prevention programs, public education efforts and support services for those affected by suicide. Additionally, Greater Nashua Mental Health will share insights into their comprehensive and affordable mental health and substance use disorder services.

“We are excited to host this important event, which aims to break down barriers and promote open discussions about mental wellness,” said Sara Ceaser, director of Volunteer and Community Engagement. “By providing a stigma-free environment, we hope to empower individuals of all ages, including older adults, to prioritize their mental health and seek the support they need.”
