Nashua hiker rescued from Mount Major
ALTON – Carl Newman of Nashua had a close call on the evening of March 26 while hiking Mount Major.
According to the state Fish and Game Department, Newman contacted conservation officials at approximately 5 p.m. He said he was injured and in need of assistance on the mountain’s blue trail.
Conservation officials were joined by Alton Fire and Rescue as well as the Lakes Region Search and Rescue.
Equipped with a 6X6 utility vehicle, Alton firefighters found Newman about a half-mile from the trailhead.
Once he was safely off the mountain, Newman told first responders that he “encountered ice and slippery conditions” on the way to the summit. Newman said he realized he was not properly equipped to manage such conditions and decided to turn around.
One the way down the mountain, he slipped on a branch and sustained a lower leg injury. Because he had his phone with him, Newman was able to call for help right away.
Located in the Belknap Range, Mount Major stands at 1,786 feet tall. The route to the summit is a mile-and-a-half long and is listed as being moderately difficult.
