HUDSON – Justo Rivera of Hudson is a lucky man two times over — once for winning $1 million on a scratch-off lottery ticket and again for cashing it in just before it expired.

Rivera was sifting through a pile of Massachusetts State Lottery tickets when he suddenly came across the million-dollar gem and immediately went to cash it in. According to Massachusetts Lottery officials, Rivera discovered the winning ticket on Sept.6 — the expiration date was Sept. 8.

Using the Massachusetts Lottery app, Rivera was scanning a large group of scratch tickets that he had in his basement. The app allows users to scan tickets rather than the traditional scratch-off method. Upon scanning the “10,000,000 Gold” game, he realized he had a winner.

Rivera elected to take a lump sum payment of $650,000 rather than an annuity. He is planning to use his winnings to pay for a trip to Disney World.

Varnum Market in Lowell, Mass., where Rivera purchased the ticket, will receive a $10,000 bonus for the sale.
