Trial begins today for local woman facing theft charges

NASHUA – Testimony is scheduled to begin today in the trial of Christine Fernandez, a 38-year-old local woman facing two felony charges stemming from her alleged theft and resale of a ring worth more than $1,500.

The Superior Court jury that will hear the trial was seated Monday, as was another jury that will hear the felony assault trial of Hudson resident James Burton III, which is scheduled for Feb. 13-14.

Fernandez, whose trial is also estimated to take two days, lived in Litchfield at the time a grand jury indicted her on one count each of theft by unauthorized taking and theft of lost or mislaid property.

The charges, both felonies, accuse Fernandez in the theft of the ring, and for allegedly pawning it in June 2017 in Litchfield.

The exact value of the ring isn’t provided in Fernandez’s case summary, but the fact it is more than $1,500 makes the charge a felony.

Burton, meanwhile, goes to trial on two counts of first-degree assault with a deadly weapon, and one count each of reckless conduct and conduct after an accident.

The charges accuse Burton of hitting a person with his car, allegedly striking the person in the leg with a baseball bat, then fleeing the scene.

The alleged incidents took place on March 31 in Hudson.
