Multiple yarn cleanouts brings skein after skein on scene

By Chris Graham - Chris' Mailbag | Feb 18, 2018

Organizations knitting and crocheting for charity range from Warm Up America, a Foundation based in Texas, to Tiny Hats for Tiny Babies keeping preemies warm in East Africa, however, local folks often like to look for local groups volunteering their needlework talents to make warm items for children, seniors, the homeless and those less fortunate close to home. A reader helping friends ready to give up some of their yarn turns to the Mailbag to ‘hook them up’ with a worthy cause.

Folks working together works for those in need

“I am collecting yarn from several friends who are cleaning out their stashes,” writes Becky C. of Hollis (LTR 3,355). “Do know of a group that would like it delivered?” ‘Baby booties, hoodies and hats – bottle cozies, blankets, and mats – knitted socks, gloves, and mittens – (keep an eye on balls of yarn if you have kittens) … lap blankets, neck warmers, shawls, and even toys – things for infants, seniors, girls and boys.’ While Chris’ Mailbag knows of several groups and individuals who enjoy creating knitted and crocheted items for donation to folks in need, even school children, who’ve braved the elements unprepared for bitter cold, publication gives everyone equal opportunity to respond to this offer which is sure to help many. Thanks to Becky for this wonderful effort helping those wanting to give and those in need. Folks interested in contacting Becky can reach her at 465-7345 or via email at: rbullock crowther@gmail.com.

Is anyone looking for pill bottles?

Recently, several readers have contacted the Mailbag looking for organizations collecting plastic pill bottles for missions to countries like Haiti, the Dominican Republic, Africa, etc. Malawi, for example, a landlocked African country near Mozambique with a population of more than 16 million people, is one of the least developed countries in the world. Resources in Malawi are so scarce that most doctors just wrap prescription pills in the nearest piece of scrap paper or drop them in the patient’s hand before they send them on their way. With more than half of the population living more than three miles from the nearest health clinic, pills can easily be dropped or lost. – Malawi Project. Even a small quantity of pill storage containers can protect medication from the elements and help save lives. If you represent or have information regarding an agency, organization, church group, etc. collecting pill bottles for a mission project here or abroad, send the information to Chris’ Mailbag at the email address at the bottom of the column. Publication of the information could be ‘lifesaving’ since every bottle saved could help save a life.

Paraffin wax machine available

“Now that the ice has melted outside my outdoor-access storage unit and I can safely resume my inventory without fearing a fall, I have a Homedics Paraspa for someone who could use it,” says Bert the Picker of Nashua (LTR 1,775). “The machine measures 13-inches long by 9-inches wide by 7½-inches tall and contains a heat source and tank that holds paraffin wax. The machine melts the wax and maintains it in a liquid state, so when you immerse your hand, foot, etc. in the liquid paraffin, the wax coats the body part completely. The warm temperature from the wax penetrates the skin, muscles and bones to provide a soothing effect that can help relieve the pain of arthritis, bursitis, joint inflammation or muscular strains or spasms. The machine comes with paraffin and an extra supply; don’t have a manual, but instructions can be found online (Homedics website).” Interested parties can reach Bert at 883-0990. If no answer, leave a message with a contact phone number and he’ll get back to you. Willing to deliver locally within Nashua.
