MAYE DAYS: Pats QB trying to get most out of preseason

After two days of joint practices, it’s not exactly known for sure if Drake Maye will see any time at all in Saturday night’s preseason game vs. the Philadelphia Eagles at Gillette Stadium.
And if he does, what would he want to get out of it?
“I think you take it back to looking at my Eagles preseason game my rookie year,” he said. “There’s some great things that you learn, and you learn about being in the huddle, and kind of the operation, and being in a stadium with the play clock and little things like that.
“Obviously, coming into my third year, I got a lot of that, kind of understand what it’s like. I’m just here with the guys and trying to get better. Whatever they think with the preseason, I’m here to play and ready to go out, and whatever they think, I’m here for them and here for this team.”
The general feeling was the Patriots had a pinpoint precise day on Wednesday, not so much on Thursday. What did Maye think?
“I think we had a lot of great work,” Maye said. “I think the biggest thing is that is a good football team over there, and I think just not riding the rollercoaster. I feel like we had some good periods that we were attacking them and had some good plays.
“Then we had some periods where we got to continue the competitive stamina, and that is the thing about this game. It can’t just be one play here, one play there. You got to string some plays together in a row, and I felt like we did that more (Wednesday) than we did today.”
Maye knows what he wants to work on.
“I know it’s tough down there in the red zone, a lot of bodies in a short amount of space, but I feel like we could have done more in the red zone, and I think that is something for us to learn,” Maye said. “It’s one of our focuses this year to be better in the red zone, so we got some work to do.”
Perhaps Maye wouldn’t have said the same thing a couple of years ago when Philly came here for joint practices.
“Two years ago, I was a rookie coming in here. I was watching some of those plays earlier in the week. I was just laughing,” he said. “I motioned somebody who was coming forward and snapped it, and then there was a penalty, and little things like that, that we were laughing about– just how far we have come. But I think they won a Super Bowl that year. I think that was, what, 2024? Yeah, they won it.
“So, you can see that they have a great football team, a lot of the same players over there. So, we got to continue to show our identity. I think we definitely improved in regards to 2024, that’s for sure. So, we have some ways to go, but I’m proud of the guys’ effort.”
And the Patriots will see the same team Saturday night. One more preseason game, at Cleveland, to go after this.
