UNH women’s soccer falls short at Siena, 1-0
LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. – Senior goalkeeper Sonja Zeepvat (Mendham, N.J.) made three saves, but the University of New Hampshire women’s soccer team was edged by Siena, 1-0, on Sunday afternoon at Hickey Field in non-conference action.
Catherine Rogers scored the game’s lone goal in the 13th minute as the Saints improved to 1-1-0. The Wildcats are now 0-1-1 on the season.
Siena opened the scoring in the 13th minute (12:31) when Catherine Rogers headed in a corner kick delivered by Anna Swyers for a 1-0 advantage.
UNH recorded its first shot on goal in the 17th minute when senior midfielder Elizabeth Finn (Scituate, Mass.) tested Siena goalkeeper Cate Burns from 25 yards out.
Finn nearly found the equalizer in the 22nd minute with a 30-yard strike destined for the upper right corner, but Burns made a diving save to preserve the Saints’ lead.
Siena almost doubled its advantage in the 62nd minute when a shot by Noelle Gorham struck the crossbar.
Sophomore forward Amber Clarke (Cato, N.Y.) generated a quality chance in the 77th minute, but Burns came up with another save.
Zeepvat kept the Wildcats within a goal in the 82nd minute, stopping a shot by Briana Neary.
The Wildcats return to action for their home opener on Sunday, Aug. 23, when they host Granite State rival Dartmouth at 2 p.m. on ESPN+.
