BURLINGTON, Vt. 一 The New Britain Bees brought their hard-hitting offense to Centennial Field, ripping off a five-run fifth inning and scoring in six different frames en route to an 11-0 win over the Vermont Lake Monsters to begin the best-of-three Futures League Championship Series on Friday night.

Leadoff-hitting center fielder Kacin Robinson (Stonehill) went 2-for-4 with three RBI and two runs scored to help lead New Britain’s 15-hit attack, which featured six repeat contributors. Both of Robinson’s hits went for extra bases, including a three-RBI triple that highlighted the team’s five-run outburst in the fifth inning.

At the other end of the lineup, shortstop Grady Schopps (Salve Regina) had a 3-for-5 game with an RBI single and two runs scored. League-leading hitter and first baseman George Slauson (UConn) also produced multiple hits and multiple RBI, while designated hitter Tim Hennig (Binghamton) homered as part of his two-hit effort.

Vermont, which scored 20 runs across three semifinal round games against Worcester, was limited to three hits and fell in shutout fashion for the first time all summer. Designated hitter Thomas Moss (Trinity) had one of them while reaching base three times in total.

Nathan Kempton (Brown) secured the victory for New Britain, working two perfect innings in his second scoreless outing of the playoffs thus far.

The Bees jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead in the opening frame, with Robinson drawing a leadoff walk, stealing second and scoring on Slauson’s single through the right side. After a two-out hit batter and a walk loaded the bases, third baseman Dylan Swarts (Union) doubled the advantage on a base knock to center field.

New Britain starter Alex Casey (Union) worked three scoreless frames to hold the lead while the score was tight, stranding two runners on base with the help of two strikeouts in the second inning.

In the fourth, two-out offense allowed the visitors to extend their lead. Schopps started the rally with a single down the right-field line before moving corner to corner on Robinson’s double into the right-center gap. After Slauson was intentionally walked, Schopps scored on a wild pitch from Vermont reliever Brandon Rovinelli (Columbia).

Kempton then retired the side in order in relief of Casey, setting the stage for the offense’s game-breaking frame. Second baseman Tyler Garbooshian (Rutgers) got the offense started on a one-out walk and advanced to third on a Swarts single, while left fielder Ben Kuja (Brandeis) brought him home on a single inside the foul line.

Two batters later, a two-out infield hit from Schopps filled the bases for Robinson, who dropped a three-run triple into deep left-center. Slauson followed with an RBI single up the middle to make it an 8-0 game.

New Britain continued its streak of scoring in five straight innings with single runs in the next two frames. Hennig ripped a solo shot out to right to bring the Bees to the double-digit plateau in the seventh, while a Schopps single through the right side of the infield in the eighth concluded the scoring.

Following Casey’s start, four consecutive Bees relievers held the home team without a hit. Dominic Carollo (Salve Regina) struck out two in his inning of work.

The series shifts back to New Britain for a 6:35 p.m. first pitch on Saturday night, with the Bees one more win away from their first Futures League title in franchise history.
